Margaret Whiting and Jimmy Wakely – Silver Bells(1950/11)
SP盤 “Christmas Candy” のB面。

Though credited as being from the Paramount movie “The Lemon Drop Kid,” “Silver Bells” had been in the stores, on the radio, and on the jukeboxes in plenty of time for the start of the 1950 Christmas holiday season, while the general public didn’t get to see Bob Hope sing it on the big screen until spring 1951. No matter…the Jay Livingston & Ray Evans tune became a true seasonal classic, with the Whiting-Wakely version commonly heard on the radio and their Capitol single in regular reissue through the years.

One year after his mega-hit of “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” the versatile cowboy star of movies radio and TV returned to the record stores with another successful wintertime fantasy set to music.
Note that some existing YouTube posts of Gene’s “Frosty” may either be much later remakes, reissues swimming in added reverb, or the alternate 1950 take that has been included in some Autry CD compilations with his initial “thumpety-thump-thump” sung in a different tune from the answering chorus.

With Gene Autry’s multi-million-selling 1949 recording of “Rudolph” destined to remain a big holiday favorite for years to come, Spike figured that 1950 wasn’t too late to put out a more novel version of his own. Though it performed quite respectably, the Jones effort was easily eclipsed by the return of Gene’s blockbuster single, which reached #3 on the best-sellers.
