The Fox musical “Sweet Rosie O’Grady” showed Betty Grable at her peak….and it introduced one of the most popular ballad hits of the year. “My Heart Tells Me’ reached the top spot on “Your Hit Parade” in December ’43 and stayed there into February ’44. Glen Gray’s recording remained at #1 on the best-seller chart for a month and was the band’s most successful release of the decade.

Phil Brito – You Belong To My Heart(1944)
orchestra conducted by Paul Lavalle

Song from the Disney film “The Three Caballeros” was popularized by Bing Crosby, though this pretty version also sold a few copies. Brito had served as vocalist with the Al Donahue band between 1939 and 1942. Conductor Paul Lavalle is remembered for his years of leading the studio orchestra on various popular radio programs, most notably NBC’s “Band Of America” broadcasts.

Vaughn Monroe and his Orchestra – This Heart Of Mine(1944)
vocal: Vaughn Monroe

Performed by Fred Astaire in MGM’s “Ziegfeld Follies,” the Arthur Freed-Harry Warren tune is presented Monroe-style in this seldom-heard Victor single, backed by the also-posted “The Love I Long For”.

Count Basie and his Orchestra – This Heart Of Mine(1945)

This and the also-posted flipside “That Old Feeling” included the rare presence within the Basie band of a string section (possibly arranged by Hugo Winterhalter). Had this become a best-seller, perhaps there might have been more such sessions forthcoming. “This Heart Of Mine” is a Harry Warren-Arthur Freed tune that Fred Astaire performed on-screen in the MGM musical “Ziegfeld Follies.”

erry Como – Haunted Heart(1948)
orchestra conducted by Russ Case

From the Dietz & Schwartz score for the musical revue “Inside U.S.A.,” “Haunted Heart” spent 11 weeks on “Your Hit Parade,” peaking as high as #4. It’s one of only three tunes making the best-sellers chart in 1948 for Perry Como…..an unusually slow year for Mister C (he would more than make up for it the following year with fifteen).

Jimmy Wakely with Cowboy Band – One Has My Name(The Other Has My Heart)(1948)

The unbilled female harmony voice heard during the final minute of this country-pop hit belonged to Colleen Summers, who would later become known professionally as Mary Ford when performing with future husband Les Paul. A #10 jukebox hit on the pop charts, “One Has My Name” spent 11 weeks at #1 on the country rankings. In late 1965 the tune was revived by singer Barry Young in a Dean Martin-styled arrangement that reached #13 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

This and the Oscar-nominated “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” are the two most memorable songs from the score of Walt Disney’s early-1950 animated film release of “Cinderella.” Cinderella’s singing voice in the movie was Ilene Woods, who also made a lovely commercial recording of this ballad for RCA Victor’s subsidiary label Bluebird

Though Woods provided the voice for Disney’s animated “Cinderella” character in the feature film, neither this nor the also-posted “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” are the commonly-reissued movie soundtrack versions heard elsewhere on YouTube. These were commercial ‘pop’ recordings made by RCA Victor and released on their short-lived ‘Bluebird Series’ label. Most releases of this and other “Cinderella” tunes were recorded by the major labels in late 1949 and stocked in the stores around the new year to help promote and build anticipation for the upcoming early-March theatrical debut of the Disney feature.

Here is the first and most successful among four different versions of the waltz tune to reach the top-15 on Billboard’s best-sellers chart. After Frank Sinatra refused to record the song, Mitch Miller assigned it to young hopeful Guy Mitchell. Spending four weeks at #2 on the sales listings(behind Patti Page’s “Tennessee Waltz”), it made Mitchell a star, selling over a million copies…with help from the also-popular flipside “The Roving Kind.” Those two, plus five more Guy Mitchell hits, are included in this 1951 collection.
“My Heart Cries For You” was adapted from an old French melody by Percy Faith(using the name “Mars”) with new lyrics by Carl Sigman. Other popular recordings of it by Dinah Shore, Vic Damone and Jimmy Wakely are also posted.

Al Martino – Here In My Heart(1952/04 his original #1 version)

Al’s very first hit, released by the Palda Record Company of Philadelphia, reached #1 in both the U.S. and UK. He was almost immediately signed away by Capitol records (see also “Take My Heart”), but it wasn’t until 1963 with his record of “I Love You Because” that his career finally began to take off in a major way. Tony Bennett’s version is also included in the 1952 collection.
Note that Al re-recorded “Here In My Heart” (in stereo) for Capitol in 1961. That version charted briefly and has been included on CD compilations. This posted track, however, is the original hit.

Note the mildly amusing artist credit wording on the label: a rare example of Perry’s engaging in multi-track vocalizing. This #11 juke box hit (one of 7 Como tracks included in the 1953 collection) was found on the flipside of “Say You’re Mine Again” and IMO sounds just like it had been designed to be another appealing duet with label mate Eddie Fisher (see 1952’s “Maybe”), though RCA obviously didn’t go there.

Though also recorded (more) successfully by Doris Day, this small-label version held its own, reaching the national top-10 juke box and radio airplay charts. Among singer Denise Lor’s resume entries were various TV appearances during the 1950s and ’60s, including a stint with Garry Moore and as a panelist on one of my fondly remembered game shows, Roger Price’s “Droodles” in 1954.

Aka “Two Hearts, Two Kisses,” this song was covered by at least nine other recording artists at the time, including Doris Day and Frank Sinatra. The most successful’pop’ release turned out to be the one that Randy Wood assigned to newcomer Pat Boone for his Dot Records debut

Don Cornell, Alan Dale And Johnny Desmond – The Gang That Sang “Heart Of My Heart”(1954)
orchestra and chorus conducted by Jack Pleis

Three of Coral Records’ solo vocalists joined together for one of two new recordings of this old-timey tune to visit the U.S. top-10 best-sellers chart in early ’54, both conducted by Jack Pleis. See also the Four Aces version.

Pat Boone – Two Hearts(1955/03)

orchestra and chorus conducted by Lew Douglas
For the initial year of young Pat Boone’s contract with Dot Records, he was assigned to do a pop-arranged cover version of a current R&B hit for at least one side of each new single release(a practice that ended in the spring of’56). The first of those Boone hits was “Two Hearts,” a top-10 R&B single by Otis Williams & The Charms. Both Doris Day(!) and Frank Sinatra(!) put out their own versions of the song, but Pat’s won…reaching #16 on the Billboard sales charts. He followed it with “Ain’t That A Shame” (also included in the 1955 collection).

Connie Francis – My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own(takes 19, 21)(1960)

Having become a big hit maker for M~G~M Records in late 1957 with,’Who’s Sorry Now’, nearly three years later, Connie Francis was on the west coast for a session at Radio Recorders working on the follow-up to her previous hit,’Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool’ from April 1960. Produced by Jesse Kaye, arranged by Joe Sherman and composed by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller, ‘My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own’ was the the only tune worked on at the three hour session from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on July 9, 1960. Ultimately being issued as a single in August 1960, it is interesting to note that the song was the subject of three separate sessions at Radio Recorders between July 9th and July 31st which resulted in a variety of different takes, vocal styles, presentations and tempos. At The July 9th session, take 23 consisted of take 20 onto which a second vocal was overdubbed producing the first intended master. At a July 25th session, take 37 was ultimately the version that topped the US charts and is found on most hit compilations. Take 49 at the July 31st session was issued on early pressings of M~G~M 12923 but quickly withdrawn in favor of version #2 .

Ella Fitzgerald and June Christy rushed out versions to compete and June’s charted at #27 on the Cash Box singles chart in February 1953. The biggest hit version was by Bobby Vinton charting at #9 Billboard Hot 100 in March 1964 (#2 Adult Contemporary).

Sean Flynn – Stay In My Heart(1961)

Out of Los Angeles, the saying,’The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree’ certainly holds true in the case of famous, handsome Hollywood actor, Erroll Flynn and his equally hunky son, Sean Flynn. Although Sean stuck his toe into the movie biz without much enthusiasm, his handlers wasted no time in getting him into a recording studio to try and cash in on making him a singing teen heartthrob. So, in the spring of 1961, he was hustled over to Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios and laid down vocals for four tracks that to date, only the two issued on Arvee Records single in October 1961 ever surfaced. The A-side was a cover of the Doris Day hit,’Secret Love’ and the flip was entitled,’Stay In My Heart’. With the help of a vocal coach, Sean pulled off the singing task with acceptable results but alas, a hit record was not to be had.
By the mid 1960’s, Sean Flynn left the Hollywood scene, picked up a camera and soon found himself in the middle of the Vietnam war, photographing some powerful images there. In April 1970, he went missing and was presumed dead in June 1971. His remains have never been found and recovered.

Kelly Garrett – This Heart Is Haunted(1964/03)

Born in Chester, Pennsylvania in 1944 as Ellen Boulton, she and her family would move to New Mexico in 1946. At the age of 16, she studied for a year at the College Conservatory of Music and then left for Los Angeles, where she changed her name to Kelly Garrett on the advice of her agent. Singing in clubs at night and working as a bank teller by day, within a year, she had scored a record contract with Ava Records in 1963 where two singles were issued. Both singles were produced by brothers, Gene, and Billy Page through their Overture Productions moniker, where the songs were written by Billy and Gene provided the arrangements. The first disc was’Tommy Makes Girls Cry’ b/w’Baby, It Hurts’ from August of that year and in March 1964, the second disc,’This Heart Is Haunted’ b/w’I Don’t Think He’s Coming’. The A-side of the second disc is presented here and what an A-side it is. Recorded at United Recoding in Hollywood in January 1964, it is a huge, orchestrated piece of musical drama performed by an ensemble of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ that even incorporates the fantastic musical element of the banging of a gong. The production was stellar, but unfortunately, Ava Records was in financial trouble and was slowly circling the drain. Virtually no promotion to speak of was given to the record, and it sank quickly without a trace. In less than a year, Ava was bankrupt and out of business. Kelly wasted no time in moving over to Tutti Camaratta’s Palomar Records along with the Gene and Billy Page for her first single on the label in March 1965, “Save Me From Myself’ b/w’The Boy On The Drums’. Fortunately, she had begun appearing on television, most notably on the teen music programs,’Shindig!’ and’Shivaree’ where she was able to perform her debut Palomar single. Although slickly produced and arranged, it didn’t sell many records and failed to chart. Kelly’s follow-up single for the label didn’t appear until one year later in March 1966. Produced and arranged by Tutti Camaratta,’A Toy In The Hands Of A Child’ b/w’The Answer To A Young Girl’s Prayer’ was a coupling of some very unusually complex structured pop music. That disc didn’t make any waves either but certainly showed off Kelley’s powerful vocal skills. A two-year gap passed before she signed with Mercury Records, where two singles were issued on its subsidiary label, Smash Records. The first disc from November 1968,’Love Is The Only Answer’ b/w’Knowing When To Leave’, was not a big hit despite her performing it on various television programs. It wasn’t until years later when original copies were played in Northern Soul dance venues throughout the United Kingdom that it was given its rightful appreciation and brought to pricey collectability status. Kelly continued to record throughout the 1970s for the Wizard and RCA labels as well as acting. In the 1990s, she began giving voice lessons, which she continued to do from her North Hollywood home for about ten years. She returned to New Mexico and in 2009 was diagnosed with throat and tongue cancer, which she would ultimately succumb to in 2013 at the age of 69.

Seven Of Us – The Way To Your Heart(1966)

Out of New York, this east coast ‘Wall of Sound’ production is the first of two singles credited as ‘The Seven Of Us’. Issued in May 1966, the big, Spectorian sound and style of the Righteous Brothers and Walker Brothers was at it’s musical peak and this recording was one of many that attempted to ride that hit record wave. Unfortunately, Red Bird records was basically circling the drain which left this record to go by completely unnoticed.
(Bob Hilliard & Mort Garson, who were members of the Seven Of Us’ made it to hitsville a few years earlier as composers of ‘Our Day Will Come’ by Ruby & The Romantics issued on Kapp Records).

Tim Curry – Anyone Who Had A Heart
from the album “Read My Lips”(1978)

From his 1978 debut LP, actor Tim Curry covers the Hal David & Burt Bacharach tune originally recorded by Dionne Warwick in November 1963 entitled,’Anyone Who Had A Heart’. Warwick would have a worldwide smash hit and the tune was eventually recorded by many others over the years. Curry’s take on the song is right out of the’Wall of Sound’ manual. Heavily orchestrated, lots of drama and reverb. Surprisingly, the track would remain album filler and never issued as a single.
Curry is most known for his portrayal as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 cult classic motion picture,’Rocky Horror Picture Show’. Today, although suffering from a stroke in 2012, Tim Curry continues to work as an accomplished voice actor.

Nintendo loses $3 billion in market cap after Wii U sales announcement
Nintendo shares plunge 17% after the recent announcements.
ON JANUARY 18TH, 2014
Yesterday, Nintendo el Presidente Satoru Iwata announced what many of us were expecting (and anticipating): Nintendo cut down their Wii U sales estimates from 9 million to just 2.8 million — in other words, the company expects to sell 2.8 million Wii U consoles this fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2014.
And the financial markets in the US and Japan did not like that. Nintendo shares dropped a massive 17%, wiping out $3 billion off of Nintendo’s market cap. Currently, the company has a market cap of $20 billion. Nintendo also announced that they will likely see a loss this year, which is something Nintendo has only done twice before as a publicly traded company.
