アニタ・オデイさん（米ジャズ歌手）ＡＰ通信によると、ロサンゼルスの病院で23日、死去。87歳。肺炎で入院中だった。
独学でプロ歌手の道に入り、巧みな即興を交えた歌唱力で40―50年代にジャズ歌手の第一人者となった。「スイート・ジョージア・ブラウン」「ハニーサックル・ローズ」などが代表曲。長年、麻薬、アルコール依存症に苦しんだが克服、晩年までロサンゼルスのジャズクラブなどで歌った。

ジャンプブルース、Ｒ＆Ｂ的なフィーリングを感じさせながらも、ジャズ、ポピュラーミュージックの範疇にとどまった人でした。

This was released over two sides of a 12-inch 78 disc （original’Victor scroll’ label scan not located）. The famous Richard Rodgers ballet music was choreographed by George Balanchine for its introduction on-stage by Ray Bolger and Tamara Geva in the 1936 Rodgers & Hart musical “On Your Toes.” The ballet sequence was later adapted for the 1939 film version of “On Your Toes” and again for the 1948 movie “Words And Music” （an edited version of the Lennie Hayton soundtrack recording of “Slaughter” became a hit record in 1949

ちなみに『急がば廻れ（Walk Don’t Run）』は役者で歌手でもあったトミー・レオネッティ（Tommy Leonetti）のボーカル・バージョンもありますが、元々はジャズのジョニー・スミスが１９５５年に発表した楽曲です。

今。小説を書きながら『ミスターサマータイム』を何度も聴いてる。自分の作品が映像化されたときなにか願いはあるかと問われ（映像化されるともう自分だけの作品じゃないからね）、女優さんにアカペラでこの歌ってもらいたいな〜、といったら却下されてしまった。でもやっぱり、この曲切なくて好き。
