エルヴィス・プレスリーが亡くなったのは１９７７年８月１６日。彼の没後３５周年を目前に、世界中でエルヴィスに関連したイベントやニュースが報告されている。
地元グレイスランドでは、８月１０日から８月１８日まで「エルヴィス・ウィーク」という大規模なイベントが開催される。世界中のファンが集結し、トリビュート・ライヴ、ダンス・パーティー、近しき人物たちによる講演、映画上映、パネル・ディスカッションなどが連日朝から夜まで行われるのだ。命日に行われる記念コンサートはキャパシティー１８,０００人のFedExフォーラムで、エルヴィスの元妻で女優のプリシラ、実娘で歌手のリサ・マリーなどを中心に、エルヴィスの現役時代のバンドメンバーや豪華アーティスト陣を迎えて盛大に行われる。
日本では、８月８日にベスト盤『アイ・アム・アン・エルヴィス・ファン−ジャパン・エディション』が発売となった。

また、１９５６年１２月にエルヴィスが古巣のサン・レコードに立ち寄った際に偶然居合わせたカール・パーキンス、ジェリー・リー・ルイス、ジョニー・キャッシュと行った非公式セッション音源『ザ・コンプリート・ミリオン・ターゲット』も、ベスト盤発売と同日に発売された。翌日の新聞で「１００万ドルの価値がある」と報じられ、ブロードウェイでもミュージカル化された伝説のセッションである。９月５日～１７日には渋谷Hikarieにオープンした東急シアターオーブにて、本ミュージカルの来日公演が予定されている。
さらに特報は続く。命日を前にして『エルヴィス・イン・ニューヨーク４０周年記念盤』が２０１２年秋に発売されることも急遽発表となった。こちらは１９７２年６月１０日の夜に行われたエルヴィス初のＮＹマジソン・スクエア・ガーデン公演を２ＣＤと１ＤＶＤに収めた豪華ボックスである。４０年前の『エルヴィス・イン・ニューヨーク』は全盛期のライヴ・パフォーマンスとしてファンの間でも人気の高いアルバムであった。この４０周年記念盤は午後の部と夜の部がＤＩＳＣ２枚に収められ、さらにライヴ映像も収録される。この注目すべき映像は、６月１０日の午後の部のパフォーマンス約１時間をファンがハンディ・カメラで収めたもので、世界中のファンが商品化を待ち望んでいた希少なもの。また、コンサートに先立ち行われた有名な記者会見の模様も約２０分収録となる。もちろんこれらの映像はオフィシャルとして本邦初公開となるものだ。

１９５０年代に十分大人だった人の目にはエルヴィスという歌手はかなり奇異に映ったはずだ。これは感覚的なことで理屈ではない。
肌がどんどん白くなり、容貌も変化していったマイケル・ジャクソン。彼の世界――歌声、パフォーマンスなども若い世代は熱狂したけれども、上の世代には馴染みがたい部分があったのではないか。
そういう世代間のギャップは歴史書だけ見ていても理解はできないだろう。
今後もそれが繰り返されていくのか、そろそろ終わりなのか、私の興味はそのあたりにある。
