Rafael Méndez – Dark Eyes(1952)

Jo Stafford and Frankie Laine – Pretty Eyed Baby(1951/05/14)
orchestra conducted by Paul Weston

Several years earlier, “Pretty Eyed Baby” had been recorded as “Satchelmouth Baby” by the King Cole Trio and by Deek Watson’s Brown Dots. With a Paul Weston arrangement and some alterations to the original title and lyric, this new version earned a #13 spot on the weekly pop juke box charts, followed a few months later by Jo & Frankie’s top-10 hit “Hey, Good Lookin” (also posted).

Rosemary Clooney – Beautiful Brown Eyes(1951/02/26)
orchestra conducted by Mitch Miller

Several months prior to “Come On-A My House,” Clooney released this country-flavored lament and saw it reach #11 on Billboard’s best-sellers chart…her first sizeable hit as a solo artist following her years with the Tony Pastor band. The song had originally been recorded in 1937 by The Arthur Smith Trio and was also popularly released by Jimmy Wakely with the Les Baxter Chorus.

Following several cross-over duet hits with Margaret Whiting, multi-talented country star Wakely was assigned some very ‘pop’-sounding Les Baxter arrangements. Like his “My Heart Cries For You” (also posted), this barroom melodrama in three-quarter time was a top-10 country hit that also moved product with mainstream buyers. The competing Rosemary Clooney version of “Beautiful Brown Eyes” (taken at a much slower tempo) was her first significant solo hit and is included in this 1951 collection. As vocal multi-tracking was still pretty new at the time, and most people had never heard it done with as many as four voices, this fine recording (and its unusual label billing) drew a fair amount of attention. Patti’s 1948 self-duet on “Confess” had been a moderate success, but it’s this track that is commonly cited as her true break-through hit. It would be followed in coming months by “I Don’t Care If The Sun Don’t Shine” “All My Love” and “Tennessee Waltz”…quite a good year for the Singing Rage.
Though now most commonly associated with Patti, “With My Eyes Wide Open I’m Dreaming” had originated years earlier in the now-obscure Jack Oakie-Ben Bernie musical film “Shoot The Works” and enjoyed a measure of success via several 1934 recordings.

The British-release label shown here reflects the renamed UK title (”Thank Your Stars”) for the American film “Shoot The Works,” in which this popular hit first appeared. This is one of six documented tracks by the band of “Ted” Hanson (actually trumpeter James “Jimmy” Hanson), all recorded during his lone Bluebird session as bandleader. Some other posted versions of this familiar ballad include:
