The 1962 Ray Charles’ LP “Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music” was among the decade’s most popular and influential albums, greatly furthering interest in–and acceptance of–the more mainstream-appealing songs and performers of country music. Following Ray’s huge #1 hit “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” this second single release from the LP climbed to the runner-up spot. The song had been a 1956 hit for Eddy Arnold (C&W) and Jerry Vale (pop).

Sandy Stewart – I Know He Needs Her(1963/09)
2度目の引用。

From the pen of Brill Building composer/musician/vocalist, Chip Taylor is this wistful release by then 26 year old songstress Sandy Stewart on the Columbia Pictures recording label, Colpix. ‘I Know He Needs Her’ was recorded in August of 1963 and was the last of only three singles that she had with the company and on which she gave a vocal performance that would rival that of her label mate, Shelley Fabares. Sandy Stewart had been in the music biz since 1952 and had already recorded for eight record companies before her debut Colpix single,’My Coloring Book’ in late 1962. That recording was a substantial hit which also garnered Sandy a nomination for the 1962 Grammy Award for Best Solo Vocal Performance, Female. Her vocal skill was very Pop and well suited for the American Songbook and could be compared to the sound of Eydie Gorme. Both ladies were quite impressive artists who could really express themselves musically with a lyric and melody. ‘I Know He Needs Her’ was a departure from the middle of the road style that Sandy had come to be known for and was really quite a pleasant surprise. Sounding very youthful and breathy with help from a female background vocal group, Sandy nails it effectively by restraining her powerful voice with marvelous effect above the sparse music track which does not disappoint. The arrangement is lathered with strumming guitars and soaring strings that appear within the musical mix at just the right emotive points throughout. Bravo to producer/arranger, Don Costa for creating this unexpected performance by Sandy Stewart. As of 2023, Sandy is still out there singing and also accompanied on the piano by her son, Bill Charlap.

Judy Thomas – i Don’t Know You(1965/03)

Composer, Producer: Joe South
Recorded at Nashville’s Music City Recorders in February 1965, the voice of Judy Thomas takes the lead with uncredited background vocalists on this Joe South composed and produced recording. Miss Thomas, who had about a dozen known singles over eight different record labels between 1962 to 1969 and for the most part, languished in obscurity. Her August 1964 single on Tollie entitled,’Golden Records’ b/w/’Don’t Feel Like The Lone Ranger’ along with this tune,’I Don’t Know You’, are probably her best work. This Tower release is arranged very much in the style of the things that Ray Stevens was producing at the time also in Nashville.
The musical beginings and whereabouts of Judy Thomas today remain a mystery.

Mary Wells – I Should Have Known Better(1965/10)
シングル “Please Please Me” のB面。

The last of six singles issued between October 1964 and October 1965 by former Motown hit maker Mary Wells, during her short tenure with 20th Century-Fox Record Corporation. Pulled from the second of the only two albums that she recorded with the company (the first P was reissued in 1966 on the’Movietone’ subsidiary label), Miss Wells cranked our a rocking, drum and horn filled version of the Beatles tunes,’I Should Have Known Better’ b/w’Please Please Me’. Recorded in New York City at Bell Sound Studios, the Bernie Wayne production showcased deliciously orchestrated arrangements by Joe Mazzu. The 20th Century-Fox LP from which the tracks came, was entitled’Love Songs To The Beatles’ that managed to garner a release in both France and the United Kingdom. While the single and album failed to chart, they are top notch, slickly produced productions that are highly recommended.

Mike Patterson – Don’t You Just Know It(1965/06)
ライチャス・ブラザーズの音楽ディレクター兼ロードマネージャーになる人。
これはスタジオでの疑似ライブらしい。

Another Gold Star Recording Studios obscurity.’Don’t You Just Know It’ which was a hit for Huey “Piano” Smith in 1959 is given a high enery’live’ treatment with the help of Gold Star engineer, Larry Levine who added screaming audience sound effects. The Blossoms and Edna Wright are featured background vocalists on the A-side while the flip side,’Righteous Theme’, is a brief but echo filled, percussive instrumental under the direction of Michael Patterson with an arrangement by Woody Woodrich (who also composed the tune) that features the tenor saxophone playing of Bill Baker.
Righteous Brother, Bill Medley, has stated that without his friend, Mike Patterson, there would have never been the Righteous Brothers. Back in 1962 after coming together from two different groups, Bill and Bobby Hatfield were part of a vocal group called the Paramours. Eventually other members left and they continued singing as a duo calling themselves the Righteous Brothers at Jon’s Black Derby in Santa Ana, California. Their engagement there was up and more or less, as they were walking out the door, Mike Patterson asked them to come down to the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa and perform there with his band, the Rhythm Rockers. Known as a somewhat’Surf Band’ venue at that time, they initially declined but then relented and made an appearance and were quite well received. One of their tunes,’Little Latin Lupe Lu’ drew a great response from the attendees. Bill and Bobby had already recorded the tune for the tiny, Moonglow Records, but the record was going nowhere. Mike Patterson brought 1500 copies to’Gracie’s Music’ in Santa Ana, which sold like hotcakes because of their newfound local interest and by radio stations calling in to see what was selling.’Little Latin Lupe Lu’ became a nice sized hit. One thing led to another and the Righteous Brothers were opening for the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. They were hired as regular performers for the new ABC-TV music program,’Shindig!’ and shortly after, their contract at Moonglow Records was leased by record producer, Phil Spector who went on to create the recording with them that went on to be the most played record of the 20th century. Bill and Bobby hired Mike Patterson to be their music director and road manager and Patterson also managed the Blossoms, who would perform with the Righteous Brothers and also Tom Jones. Bill Medley and Mike Patterson remained lifelong friends until Patterson’s death from heart failure on his 75th birthday, July 1, 2017.

2度目の引用。

The last of four known singles issued by Miss Dorety between 1959 and 1966.
Originally from Wisconsin where Dee Dee had won several singing contests at the age of five, her family relocated to Burbank, California in 1956. By the time she was ten years old, her father hooked her up with a manager by the name of Jesse Hodges who landed her a deal with Freedom Records under the direction of Dorsey Burnette. Recorded at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood, the A-side was the atmospheric rocker,’Billy Billy’ b/w’Give Your Love To Me’. She soon hired a different manager, Joe Laine (Frankie Laine’s brother) and a single on Hot Records transpired followed later by another on the Magnet label. At the age of eleven, Dee Dee performed on several TV shows and made appearances at the Beverly Hills Hotel as well as a one week engagement singing at the Pavilion at the Pomona Fairgrounds. At the age of fifteen, Dee Dee reconnected with Dorsey Burnette and she along with Dorsey, his brother Johnny and Jackie DeShannon would perform at the Burbank armory. In the spring of 1966 at the age of seventeen , Dee Dee would walk into Gold Star Studios for her final recording session. Dorsey Burnette not only was the producer but also composed the two songs scheduled to be issued the following month on the Era label. ‘If The World Only Knew’ b/w’To Go Our Separate Ways’ were arranged by’Wrecking Crew’ keyboard player Don Randi, engineered by Gold Star co-owner Stan Ross and fortified with the impeccable background vocals of the Blossoms. ‘If The World Only Knew’ seems to have been the intended B-side but was by far the more impressive of the two tracks. Standing out as a soulful, echo drenched dance floor track with an infectious, driving beat clocking in at a brief two minutes and twelve seconds, it is worth every single second of it. The disc unfortunately failed to chart and after graduating with Burbank High School’s class of 1966, Dee Dee would eventually marry in 1968. Today, Dee Dee Daugharty Culotta is a happily retired mother of two grown children and lives in southern California.

This was the second of seven top-40 charting singles for the First Edition…and the last one before Kenny’s name was added to the label credits. For me, what really made this performance was the well-balanced close harmony of the group during the repeated “But you know I love you” choruses…which was diminished (IMO) in some of the common stereo versions that mixed Kenny’s voice further out front.

Afteer having recently purchased the Red Bird/Blue Cat/Tiger/Daisy catalog, Nashville based record executive, Shelby Singleton unsuccessfully attempted at attaining a hit by utilizing one of the unissued masters. In this case, it was the recording of’You Don’t Know’ originally recorded by Ellie Greenwich and issued in August 1965 on Red Bird Records. This SSS International issue features a previously unreleased version of the original backing track and background vocals with the lead vocal of an unknown female vocalist. Although Joe Venneri is credited as producer of this 1969 release, his actual involvement with this recording appears to be only with the lead vocal track. Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and George Morton were the composers and producers of the original recording on which Ellie Greenwich provided the original lead and back ground vocals.

Delaney & Bonnie – Only You Know And I Know(1971/09)

Joe Haywood – In Your Heart You Know I Love You(1971/12)

Connie Stevens – I Don’t Know(1971)

During her brief tenure with Bell Records between 1970 and 1972, actress/vocalist, Connie Stevens managed to crank out a few magical recordings with producer, Thom Bell. The unexpected musical marriage of a pop songstress stepping into the R&B/soul musical territory of the then burgeoning,’Sound Of Philadelphia’, had her heading eastward from Hollywood for the recording sessions at Joe Tarsia’s, Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. For those familiar with Connie’s previous recordings, to feast their ears on this new side of her vocal talent had to be jaw dropping for fans as well as those in the music biz.. It was unfortunately, her cast into cement image of a vivacious, blonde and perky talent that was ultimately also a curse in regard to the success of her Philadelphia recordings with Thom Bell. Disc jockeys more than likely tossed her new discs on the Bell label off to the side without even a listen. Connie’s first outing with the Philadelphia crew was the original version of’Keep Growing Strong’ from the fall of 1970 (Bell 922) that would be recorded two years later again at Sigma with Thom Bell and the vocals of the Stylistics. Given the new title of’Betcha By Golly, Wow’ along with a new backing track, it went straight to hitsville. Connie version is an absolutely stellar production with a flip side track,’Tick- Tock’, that was an full-blown, skull crunching production. If given the proper promotion, either side could have really changed Connie’s musical destiny. The passing of time has created quite a demand for that very Bell single and commands a nice sum of cash among collectors of soul records. Finally, the tune,’La La Means I Love You’ recorded in the spring of 1971. Although it is a cover version of the Delphonics hit from 1967 with Thom Bell, he gave the classic tune a wonderful new take on it. An impressive performance by all of those involved has become an elusive mystery regarding the release and actual pressing of 45 rpm discs. With a catalog number, Bell 992, the flip side was this slick, jazz infused tune entitled’I Don’t Know’, but there has yet to surface an actual copy of the recording on styrene or vinyl. Happy hunting to all of those interested. If discovered, you will have indeed struck gold with some wonderful Philadelphia musical magic that deserves to be celebrated.

Joe Esposito of the group Brooklyn Dreams is heard along with Donna on this single, released in-between her #1 hits “MacArthur Park” and “Hot Stuff.” On Donna’s “Live And More” LP, “Heaven Knows” first appeared not as a stand-alone track but was included within the 17:47 “MacArthur Park Suite” medley
Per Wikipedia: The 7-inch version of “Heaven Knows” was created by combining the vocals from Summer’s “Live and More” album with the instrumental tracks from Brooklyn Dreams’ “Sleepless Nights” album (on that album Joe Esposito sings the lead vocal and Brooklyn Dreams sing the chorus) – a rare instance of a Summer 7-inch single which is actually longer than the album version. Bob Esty produced and arranged the “Sleepless Nights” album and should be given co-producer and arranger credit for the 7″ version of “Heaven Knows” but the liner notes in every Summer compilation released to date only list Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte as producers and mistakenly credit Greg Mathieson as the arranger.
