　光化学スモッグ注意報が県内で発令された８、９日、県保健環境研究所（太宰府市）が、大気中で通常の３倍超にあたる濃度の硫酸塩を測定していた。特に北九州市では注意報が発令された９日は、硫酸塩も夜間まで高濃度を記録していた。中国大陸では硫酸塩の発生原因となる石炭が大量に使用されており、同研究所は「中国大陸で発生した原因物質が、硫酸塩などと九州に流れ込んだために光化学スモッグが起きたとみられる」と推測している。

一昨年あたりから「光化学スモッグ」という懐かしい言葉を目にすることが増えました。

あれは１９７０年７月１８日のことです。東京立正高校（東京都杉並区）の校庭で、女生徒約４０人が頭痛、吐き気、目の痛みを訴え、ばたばたと倒れ、大騒ぎとなる事件がありました。
新公害「光化学スモッグ」の衝撃的な登場でした。
すぐに注意報や警報が出されるようになり、原爆マグロや放射能雨のときのように、みな戦々恐々となったのをよく憶えております。
もっとも、当時、私が住んでいたのは東京でも外れのほうで、目にしみるスモッグはテレビのニュースで見るくらいでした。

現代で目にしみるのは唐辛子エキスの防犯スプレーくらいかと思ってましたが、大陸中国に近い地方で「光化学スモッグ」が頻繁に発生するようになった由。やはり今回も目にしみるそうです。
とんだ７０年代リバイバルで、こういうのだけはゴメンですね。

目にしみるといえば、、、『Smoke Gets in Your Eyes』。
光化学スモッグの日は、せめてもこういう美しい調べで、心安んじていただきたいと思います。

ミュージカル『ロバータ』（１９３３年）に始まり、映画『ロバータ』（１９３４年）、映画『ラブリー・トゥ・ルック・アット』（１９５２年）で広く世に知られ、録音しているアーチストも多いですね。
ポール・ホワイトマン楽団（歌入り）、アーティ・ショウ楽団とグラマシー・ファイブ、ザ・プラターズ（１９５９年）、テディ・ウィルソン、ナット・キング・コール、アート・テイタム、ジョン・ルイス、セロニアス・モンク、チャーリー・マリアーノ、クリフォード・ブラウン、ジョニー・グリフィン等々。
スタンダードの中のスタンダードといった貫禄です。ダーク・ダックスもたしかレコードにしてると思います。
