John VanWerkhoven may not be obsessive compulsive, but there is no doubt he is obsessed with American Graffiti, the 1973 film by director George Lucas.
It’s the feature cars that get him the most excited. The race-ready black 1955 Chevy driven by Harrison Ford. The yellow 1932 Ford coupe driven by actor Paul Le Mat as the two faced off on Paradise Road.
American Graffiti is a coming of age film set in 1962 in Modesto, Calif., where Lucas grew up. The film captured the teenage rock ‘n’ roll cruising culture of the era by featuring the lives of a group of high school graduates uncertain about their future. Most of the action takes place in one night.
The film cost just $1.27 million to produce and has grossed more than $200 million since its general release in the U.S. on Aug. 1, 1973.
VanWerkhoven had always wanted a little car with a big motor. Translation: a hot rod.

MODESTO JOURNAL
Cruising Through Town He Put on the Map

MODESTO, Calif. – George Lucas stepped out of a 1946 apricot-colored Mercury convertible and signed a few final autographs, mostly posters and photographs from “Star Wars.” Fans yelled, “We love you, George!” and “Welcome back home, George!” though Mr. Lucas was saying goodbye to his sisters and getting ready to leave. A black limousine took him away, making a sharp left before this city’s arch and its century-old slogan, faintly discernible in the twilight, “Water Wealth Contentment Health.”
For the past hour, Mr. Lucas had served as the grand marshal of a classic-car parade, the highlight of this city’s annual three-day American Graffiti Car Show festival, which took place last weekend. He had ridden alone and then with his fiancée, Mellody Hobson, pointing out to her spots from his adolescence that became the setting for his 1973 movie, “American Graffiti.”
