Two Mel’s Diners close, joining other chains
A day after hosting Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, who promises that his tax cut plan will help stimulate the sagging economy, Mel’s Diner closed its doors Tuesday, leaving 50 employees in Sarasota and Bradenton jobless and without their last paychecks.

アメリカでも外食産業は不調なようで、前年からフランチャイズが次々閉店していた「メルズ・ダイナー」が１月１６日（水）、フロリダの中心となる２店舗を閉め、事実上倒産したようです。

もともと映画「アメリカン・グラフィティ」のメルズ・ドライブイン（創業１９４７年）とは関係なく、１９８９年にクリス・カラコスタなるイタリア系アメリカ人によって設立されたチェーン店らしいのですが、元祖のメルズのほうも本家争いで分裂してるそうで、なんだかややこしいことになってます。
