Mid-teenage Janis Ian wrote and recorded this then-controversial song about interracial teen romance in 1965. The single was eventually released the following year and received some regional radio play and record sales but did not chart nationally. Then in April 1967 on the CBS-TV special “Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution,” a very-impressed Leonard Bernstein discussed the record and introduced Janis performing “Society’s Child.” It was then that the record took off.
