Patti Page, Who Dominated The’50s Pop Charts, Dies

Patti Page, whose comforting voice made hits of heartbreaking ballads （”Tennessee Waltz”） and novelty songs （”How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?”）, died Tuesday in Encinitas, Calif. She was 85 years old.

Page was born Clara Ann Fowler in Oklahoma in 1927, and as a teenager, sang on a radio program in Tulsa, Okla. She was soon touring with the Jimmy Joy Band and landed a record deal with Mercury Records after meeting Benny Goodman. Her country-inflected delivery and crossover appeal made her a dominant force on the charts, starting with a trio of hits released in 1950 — “With My Eyes Wide Open, I’m Dreaming,” “All My Love （Bolero）” and “Tennessee Waltz,” which stayed at No. 1 for months. Later hits included “I Went To Your Wedding,” “Cross Over the Bridge,” “Allegheny Moon” and “Old Cape Cod.”

Page was the top-selling female singer of the 1950s with more than 100 million records sold. Her most enduring songs remain Tennessee Waltz, one of two songs the state of Tennessee has officially adopted, and How Much Is That Doggie in the Window.
“I was a kid from Oklahoma who never wanted to be a singer, but was told I could sing,” she said in a 1999 interview. “And things snowballed.”
She created a distinctive sound for the music industry in 1947 by overdubbing her own voice when she didn’t have enough money to hire backup singers for the single, Confess. She went on to score 15 gold records and three gold albums with 24 songs in the top 10, including four that reached No.1.
She was popular in pop music and country and became the first singer to have television programs on all three major U.S. networks, including The Patti Page Show.

　ＡＰ通信などによると、パティ・ペイジさん（米歌手）が１日、米カリフォルニア州南部エンシニータスの療養施設で死去、８５歳。
　南部オクラホマ州生まれで、１９５０年代の米国を代表する女性歌手の一人。代表曲「テネシー・ワルツ」は一千万枚以上を売り上げる大ヒットを記録し、日本では江利チエミによるカバーでも有名。９８年発売のアルバムでグラミー賞（トラディショナル・ポップ・ボーカルパフォーマンス部門）を受賞、また映画や舞台などで女優としても活躍した。

けさＪＲ日豊本線上りの普通列車が駅に停車した際車掌の操作ミスでホームと反対側のドアが開くトラブルがありました。けが人はいませんでした。ＪＲ九州大分支社によりますときょう午前６時２１分日豊本線上りの普通列車が中山香駅に停車した際、車掌がドアの開閉ボタンの操作を誤り、ホームと反対側のドアが２０秒間開いた状態となりました。次に停車した宇佐駅でも同様のトラブルが起きました。列車にはおよそ１５人の乗客がいましたがけが人はいませんでした。車掌は乗務歴２５年以上で、「きちんとホームを確認せず思い込みで押してしまった」と話しているということです。ＪＲ九州大分支社は「再発防止の指導を徹底するとともに社内の規定に基づいて処分を検討する」とコメントしています。

人が操作している以上はこういうミスはゼロにはできない。
かといって機械任せじゃ誤作動が恐い。
絶対安全を求めるなら異なるシステムによる何重ものチェックが必要だ。

ビーチ・ボーイズに『キャビネッセンス』という歌がある。
１９６９年２月にリリースされたアルバム『20/20』のナンバーで、これが鉄道の歌かどうかは今に至るも不明だが、歌詞に
Cabin（他動詞か名詞か？　名詞なら客室？）
iron horse（機関車、オートバイ、自転車の３つの意味がある）
railroad
といった単語が出てくる。
私個人としては、列車の最後尾にある展望車のオープンデッキから広大なトウモロコシ畑を眺めているノスタルジックで牧歌的なイメージ。
