Denny Provisor – Little Girl Lost(1965/06 Valiant Records version)
Arranger: T. Oliver

The first of two singles issued on the Valiant label by blue-eyed soul singer, Denny Provisor. A musically gifted youngster, Provisor learned to play piano as a young boy and eventually was part of several band while in high school. Upon graduation, he managed to score a two disc recording contract with 20th Century-Fox Records in 1964. The first release,’Mickey Mouse’ b/w’Walk On With Him’ managed to receive airplay in several markets but did not make the Top 100 nationally. In 1965, then 21 year old Denny Provisor signed with Valiant Records where his first single was a re-release of his second 20th Century-Fox disc,”Little Girl Lost’ b/w’Dead Letter’. For this version however, the addition of background vocals and the slight lowering of the pitch of the entire track really gave the recording a bigger and more dramatic sound when compared to the 20th Century-Fox version from December 1964. Denny’s second single,’It Really Tears Me Up’ b/w/’She’s Not Mine Anymore’ was recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios in October 1965 and the Bodie Chandler arrangement is absolute pure musical power. The maturity of Denny’s lead vocal is quite astonishing and was a sign of wonderful things that would soon come for the young singer. After a brief stint with the group, The Hook on Uni Records, Denny would become a member of the The Grass Roots on Dunhill for the the June 1969 release,’I’d Wait A Million Years’. He would record and perform with the group until officially leaving in 1972. The band would regroup in 1974 and sign with Haven Records. Denny would tour and perform with the Grass Roots for several years before Marrying and moving to Wisconsin. While there he joined the group, The Hits and performed together for over twenty years. Today he performs with one of The Hits members and his son as DPX (The Denny Provisor Experience).

Stu Phillips & The Hollyridge Strings – You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’

from the album “Feels Like Lovin’ / Stu Phillips, His Orchestra and Chorus”(1965/05)Capitol Records ST 2356
Out of Los Angeles, talk about an amazingly talented cast of characters, this lavishly orchestrated production is the creation of the genius that is Stu Phillips.
In 1964 while working at the west coast office of Colpix Records as the head of Artists & Repetoire, Phillips freelanced as an orchestrator/producer/arranger at Capitol records. His first project was a session with the Four Preps on a tune entitled,’A Letter To The Beatles’. That tune was his inspiration to create an albums worth of instrumental Beatles tunes arranged with a new modern sound. Credited to the’Hollyridge Strings’, the concept was a huge success. By 1965, Phillips had left Colpix and recorded exclusively for Capitol. The popularity of the Hollyridge Strings Beatles collection eventually led to other LP’s that featured the hits of the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, the Four Seasons, Nat’King’ Cole and also a wonderful Christmas album. (Arrangers, Perry Botkin, Jr. as well as Jimmie Haskell also provided orchestral arrangements for supsequent Hollyridge Strings LP’s.)
Recordedat the Capitol Tower in Hollywood in the spring of 1965 and issued in July, the’Feels Like Lovin’ LP showcased the talents of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ on the basic rhythm track with the addition of the Hollyridge Strings and beautiful vocals by the Ron Hicklin Singers. Although not a big seller, Stu Phillips has said that it was his favorite album during his tenure with Capitol Records.

Wayne Harris – You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ (1965)

Out of Nashville, from the infamous record label founded in 1962 by producer William Beasley which specialized in releasing cover versions on 45 RPM singles usually sold for a list price of 39 cents (less than half the price of the major label originals) in five & dime stores and supermarkets.
The company was fortunate to have access to some of the top-notch session musicians and vocalists in Nashville. Some of those involved in the recordings included Ray Stevens, Sam Moore (later of Sam And Dave), Sandy Posey and Bobby Russell. Dick Martin of’Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In’ fame is also rumored to have done novelty record covers for the label.
The company would eventually shutter it’s doors in 1969 after growing competition from Pickwick Records and other budget labels.
While the majority of the records issued on Hit were credited to fictitious groups and vocalists, the passing of the years has made many of the singles become surprisingly, highly desirable in recent years, with some commanding fairly high prices on the collector market.
There was also a subsidiary label called Country and Western Hits, which released cover versions of the country hits of the day.
This February 1965 cover version of’You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ which the Righteous Brothers had enjoyed worldwide hit status with, is backed by an original tune co composed and sang by Ed Hardin entitled,’True Love You Can’t Buy’. Hardin, who was also credited as Bill Bailey as well as Rett Hardin, was an anonymous studio vocalist who specialized and recorded many sound-alike covers for the Nashville-based Hit Records, Giant Records and Top Pop Hits labels.

シングル “Tell Me In The Sunlight” のB面。

Recorded in April 1964 at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios,’Have I Lost My Touch’ is the flip to the Spectorian,’Tell Me In The Sunlight’. Both tunes were written and produced by then twenty-one year old, Scott Engel and schoolmate, John Stewart. Engel and Stewart recorded a disc in 1963 also on the Martay label as the Dalton Brothers entitled,’I Only Came To Dance With You’. By 1965, Engel would be known as Scott Walker and achieve fame as one of the Walker Brothers along with John Maus (Walker) and Gary Leeds (Walker).

Carolyn Howard – If I Got To Lose Him(1964)
recorded 19 Oct 1964

Well, here’s one of those odd records with virtually nothing to find about its creation. The tracks were recorded at one studio while the disc cutting was done at RCA Studios. Doug Mooney, the founder and owner of VIM (Variety In Music) Records, was also the owner of Clock Records and Mystic Records which had their office in the Brill Building in New York City. This one disc deal with Carolyn Howard, if indeed that was her name and she wasn’t simply a session singer paid for the vocal performance, was on all accounts more than likely recorded in New York City. Music detectives, go…….!

Tony Reichardt and Roger Rose – You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ (1980)

While newly hired as a mail clerk at the Santa Ana, California Post Office in 1980, I befriended a fellow who was an accomplished vocalist, musician and composer by the name of ROGER ROSE. While talking music one day, I mentioned that my favorite recording was the Righteous Brothers hit,’You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’. With just a little bit of singing in High School choir and musical theater, I was in no way as accomplished as Roger but he suggested that we record that tune. After a few weeks he had the backing track finished. Other than his brother, Randy Rose on drums, Roger played all of the other instrumentation. With an arrangement and style mirroring the hit version of the tune by Hall & Oates at that time, we we got together one afternoon in October 1980 to record the vocals. After several run throughs and takes, I went on my way.
Flash forward two years and four months later while I was hanging around Gold Star Studios, Johnette Napolitano, who was the receptionist/secretary mentioned a special going on at the studio. The deal was to have a recording mastered at Gold Star along with an order of records pressed and Rodney Bingenheimer, an L.A. radio personality at that time on station KROQ, would play the disc on his radio show. I took advantage of the’Rodney Special’ offer and had the Rose/Reichardt track mastered and the records pressed. I didn’t listen to Rodney’s radio program so I never knew if he played the record. I do know that it was played September 9, 1983 on radio station WTTN in Watertown, Wisconsin on the’Polka Party’ as a favor to my Aunt Peggy Theder who knew the hosts of the show. Big fun and good memories.
Roger Rose formed the Christian Rock group, MAD AT THE WORLD in 1987 with his brother Randy, Mike Pendleton and later, Brent Gordon. Pendleton and Gordon left the band in 1992 and were replaced by Mike Link and Ben Jacobs. The group eventually disbanded in 1998. Roger and Randy reunited in 2017 to record new music after 22 years with funding through a successful Kickstarter campaign.
