Enoch Light And The Light Brigade – My Silent Song
from the album “Enoch Light Presents Spaced Out”(1969)
Adapted By: D. Lieb, E. Drake
Written-By: J. S. Bach

This famous melody originated as the’Minuet in G major’ by German composer and organist Christian Petzold (1677-c.1733). Because the music was found in the 1725’Notebook for Anna Magdalena’ compilation of pieces by various composers–and some anonymous–assembled by Johann Sebastian Bach’s second wife Anna Magdalena Bach, it was long thought by many to have been composed by Bach himself.

Wind Frankie up….and watch him go! Lively piano/big band instrumental from Carle’s days with the Hallett organization.
The famous Dvorak tune was composed in 1894 as the seventh movement in his “Humoresques” piano cycle and would become a popular work both for piano and for solo violin over the years. The most successful commercial “pop” version was Guy Lombardo’s “twin piano” arrangement of 1944 which purportedly sold over a million copies, though most of those were probably of his commonly-reissued (and near-identical) 1946 re-recording.

Woody Herman and his Orchestra – Sabre Dance(1948)

In 1948 this familiar piece from Khachaturian’s “Gayne Ballet” turned into a strong instrumental record seller for both classical and pop artists. Posted here are the Freddy Martin “Sabre Dance Boogie” and this radio airplay favorite by Woody Herman, a #7 hit on the sales charts. Woody’s swinging Second Herd recording of “Four Brothers” is also included in the 1948 collection.

Freddy Martin and his Orchestra – Sabre Dance Boogie(1948)
featuring Barclay Allen, piano

Composed for the 1942 “Gayne Ballet” by Aram Khachaturian, the “Sabre Dance” achieved its peak of mainstream popularity in 1948. In addition to the also-posted big band version by Woody Herman, this lively piano-based Freddy Martin instrumental reached #6 on the record charts, following in the tradition of several earlier classical music-sourced Martin hits and featuring Barclay Allen at the keyboard. Also posted to the 1948 collection are the Freddy Martin recordings of “The Dickey-Bird Song” and “On A Slow Boat To China.”

Well, here we have another one of those one-shot recordings by an unknown vocalist of which there is absolutely no information to be found regarding their musical history. Recorded in January 1964 at Hollywood’s United Recording, Mr. Carl La Bella is on lead vocal in front of the microphone. Both sides of the record are quite nice and the Don Ralke arrangements for the backing tracks are played to perfection by an ensemble of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ and the inclusion of a subdued background vocal group. The A-side entitled’A Little Love’ was composed by Chad Allen who in June 2022 recalled that in the early 1960’s, Don Ralke arranged most of his solo recordings as well as those with his group, The Chadons. Allen handed over several of his compositions to Ralke to see what he could do with them and after hearing the finished recording of’A Little Love’, he was surprised to hear such a percussive and full arrangement compared to his slinky and seductive demo version. While this Carl La Bella release may have slipped though the cracks in the United States, it was a popular player in Canada. The flipside,’Closer, Closer, Closer’ was composed by Don Ralke and his wife, Deeda Patrick and is a dramatic and lavishly orchestrated production that lilts and builds to a crashing climactic finish. Both sides of this Warner Bros. disc are quality musical performances and Mr. La Bella certainly did deserve much more than to be destined to the musical halls of obscurity.

Written in 1954 by Arthur ‘Guitar Boogie’ Smith as “Feudin’ Banjos,” this version was memorably featured in John Boorman’s gripping box office and critical success “Deliverance,” starring Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox. Cox and actor Billy Redden were shown playing the bluegrass number, actually performed in this soundtrack recording by Eric Weissberg (banjo) and Steve Mandell (guitar). As it was used in the movie without Smith’s permission or writer acknowledgement, he sued and eventually received composer credit and royalties.
Most singles were issued in this 2:10 edit form, though some were released with the complete 3:17 version. The 45 label initially included Weissberg’s name only in “arranged by” small print below the title (with the movie name in bold print), but later pressings more prominently displayed his name as the primary artist.

With the country agog over James Cagney’s award-winning screen performance as George M. Cohan, Waring recorded an album of Cohan favorites titled “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (Decca A-330), which included this medley of “Harrigan” and a rousing treatment of “The Yankee Doodle Boy,” often identified by the title “I’m A Yankee Doodle Dandy.”
