Scotty Moore, Original Elvis Presley Guitarist, Rock Pioneer: 1931-2016

Scotty Moore and Elvis Presley are names forever joined in history, Scotty, Elvis’s first guitarist, died yesterday at 84 in Nashville, where he’d resided for over half a century. From Presley’s first Sun recordings in July 1954, until the singer entered the Army in 1958, and for a brief time after his 1960 discharge, Scotty’s bopping, snarling and slashing guitar framed Elvis’s vocals on everything from “That’s All Right （Mama）” to “Hard Headed Woman” （from King Creole）.
Those few years made him a rock guitar pioneer alongside Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Carl Perkins and James Burton, and he reaped the acclaim. A 2000 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Scotty created a style that blended Chet Atkins and Merle Travis fingerstyle playing with slashing blues licks. He remained the fountainhead for many rock, country and rockabilly players.
Keith Richards, the ultimate devotee of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley, considers Scotty a Holy Grail. He’s long been obsessed with Moore’s solo on Elvis’s Sun recording of “I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone.” George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Dave Edmunds, John Fogerty, Brian Setzer, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Jack White are among his disciples, not to mention lesser known rockabilly players worldwide.

プレスリーのギタリスト、Ｓ・ムーア氏が死去
ＡＰ通信などによると、米ギタリストのスコティ・ムーア氏が２８日、米南部テネシー州ナッシュビルの自宅で死去した。８４歳。数カ月前から体調を崩していた。ギタリストとして歌手エルビス・プレスリーとともに活動し、ロックンロールというジャンルの確立に貢献した。
３１年、テネシー州生まれ。８歳からギターを弾き始め、第２次大戦中は海軍で兵役を務めた。５４年からプレスリーとともにバンド活動を開始。プレスリーのヒット曲「ハートブレイク・ホテル」（５６年）などでギターを担当した。（共同）

スコッティ・ムーアはエルビス・プレスリー黄金期のリードギタリストとして活躍し、２０００年にロックの殿堂入り、２０１５年にはメンフィス音楽殿堂入りを果たしたテネシー州生まれのギタリストだ。また一時は、エルビスのパーソナル・マネージャーとしても活躍した経歴を持っている。エルビスとの出会いは１９５４年にSun Recordsから「有望なシンガーがいる」と当時１０代のエルビスを紹介されたところからスタートしており、そこから二人の関係がスタート、後に「That’s All Right（Mama）」の大ヒットへと続くことになる。
彼は１９６０～１９７０年代黄金期のロック・ギターに大きな影響を与えた一人であり、エルビスのオリジナルバンドメンバーで唯一生き残っていた人物だった（Elvis Presley、ベーシストのBill Black、プロデューサーのSam Phillipsは既に他界）。プレスリーの代表的な楽曲「Heartbreak Hotel」「Blue Suede Shoes」「Jailhouse Rock」「Hound Dog」をSun Studioでプレイした事で知られており「ローリング・ストーンの選ぶ歴史上最も偉大な１００人のギタリスト」において２００３年は第４４位、２０１１年の改訂版では第２９位に選ばれている。

When Elvis Presley’s now legendary first recordings debuted on the Sun Records label in 1954, the personnel credits were simple enough. First on the label, in large print, was of course “Elvis Presley.” Just below that, in slightly smaller print, was the most modest sounding backing band in music history: “Scotty and Bill.”
“Bill” was bassist Bill Black, a hard-swinging musician and comedian. “Scotty” was innovative guitarist Scotty Moore, who died June 28 at the age of 84. Moore was the last surviving member of the historic trio. Black died in 1965, Presley in 1977.
Moore’s guitar playing, incorporating elements of rhythm and blues and country music, helped to define the sound of rock ‘n’ roll. With the exception of Chuck Berry, it would be difficult to think of another guitarist as influential in the early days of the music or one who figured so prominently in its transformation from a piano-centered form to one in which the guitar played the leading role.
Winfield Scott Moore III was born December 27, 1931. He grew up on the family farm just outside Gadsden, Tennessee. Moore’s father was himself a capable musician who performed at local dances to make ends meet when the Depression threatened to sink the farm. Like his father, Moore tried his hand at both farming and music. The music stuck, but he was bored by farming and bored by school. He wanted to see the world.

エルヴィス・プレスリーのツアーやレコーディングに最初期から６０年代まで参加し、その鮮烈なギター・サウンドでエルヴィスとロックンロールを世界中に広めたといってもいい、ギタリストのスコッティ・ムーアが他界した。
スコッティはここのところ体調を崩していたというが、６月２８日にナッシュヴィルの自宅で息を引き取った。享年８４だった。
スコッティはテネシー州フンズヴォルト近郊の農場で育ち、８歳からギターを弾いていたが、海軍勤務を経て除隊後の５２年にメンフィスへ移り、カントリー・ウェスタンのバンドに参加してここでベーシストのビル・ブラックと出会った。
１９５４年にスコッティとビルはサン・レコードのオーナーのサム・フィリップスにエルヴィスと引き合わせられ、レコーディングを試みることになったが、リハーサルの休憩中のエルヴィスの鼻歌からビルとスコッティは”That’s All Right”のアレンジを考案し、それをそのままレコーディングし、エルヴィスのデビュー・シングルとして完成させた。その後、エルヴィスとスコッティとビルはブルー・ムーン・ボーイズとして活動を開始し、ラジオ出演とライブをこなしながら南部一帯で人気を博すことになった。翌年にはドラムのＤ・Ｊ・フォンタナが加わり、エルヴィスを支える不動のユニットが出来上がり、サン・レコードで”Mystery Train”などの名音源の数々を制作していった。
１９５６年にエルヴィスはＲＣＡと契約を交わし、スコッティとバンドも同時にＲＣＡに移籍したが、これを機にスコッティたちはアーティストとして表記されなくなった。第１弾シングルとなった”ハードブレイク・ホテル”はエルヴィスにとって初のチャート１位曲となったが、もちろんこの曲も、その後の代表的なヒット曲の数々もスコッティらとともにレコーディングされたもので、ツアーも３人がエルヴィスに同行していた。
エルヴィスは６０年代に入ってから俳優業に追われることになったため、オリジナル・アルバム制作は極端に減ることになったが、その間もスコッティはエルヴィスのレコーディングに参加し、エルヴィスが再び音楽活動に本腰を入れるきっかけとなった１９６８年のテレビ特番（いわゆる『６８カムバック・スペシャル』）でもスコッティはＤ・Ｊ・フォンタナらとともに出演（ビルは６５年に他界していた）。しかし、その後は一切声がかからなくなり、ツアーもレコーディングにも参加することなく、エルヴィスと直に接したのも６８年の特番が最後だったという。
その後はプロデューサー業に励み、ジェリー・リー・ルイスやリンゴ・スターらの作品を手がけることになった。２０００年にはロックの殿堂入りも果たし、その後、ミュージシャンやメンフィスなど、さまざまなジャンルの殿堂にも名前を連ねることになった。

Though Elvis didn’t acheive mainstream success until early 1956, some of his initial record releases on Sam Phillips’ Sun label did register on the national country music charts. This update of the Little Junior Parker song was his fifth and final single for Sun before RCA Victor signed him up and set him loose on the world.
