米ホワイトハウスは、オバマ大統領が３１日にアラスカ州アンカレジを訪れ、同州にある北米最高峰・マッキンリー（６１９４メートル）の名称を「デナリ」に変更すると発表した。
デナリは、先住民が使っている名称で、「偉大な存在」という意味。名称変更は、先住民との関係強化や地球温暖化への取り組みをアピールする狙いがある。

現在台風はハワイ諸島の西側にあり、明日明後日には日付変更線を超えて正式に「台風」となります。気象庁はこの時点で「台風１７号発生」と発表するかと思われます。またハリケーンKIROは、ハリケーンと呼ばれる属性にいることから台風と同等の最大風速（10分間平均）がおよそ17m/s以上の勢力を持っているはずです。
もちろんこのハリケーンが日本に必ず接近・上陸するとは限らないのですが、間違いなく影響は与えてくるでしょう。そして今後このような台風が増加していくので注意が必要です。

私はとある学会の仕事で、例会の司会進行が女性だったので広告と議事に modératrice （modérateur「司会進行」の女性形）の語を使ってみたら、ここは男性形のままの方がよいと本人から指摘を受けた。これは「役割」の問題だから、現実世界の指示対象が実際に女性であるかにかかわりなく、modérateur を使うのだと。ここで敢えて女性形にすると若干 péjoratif であると、つまり軽視しているような文効果が生じるというのが、説明のあらましであった。＜「まどか」は女の子なのか、男の子なのか、何人いるのか？ marges de la linguistique 言語学の余白に より一部引用＞

沢田研二が女性名「ジュリー」なのでＧＳ全盛時、外人がヘンだと言ってたのを思い出した。ジュリー・アンドリュースに顔が似てるから、そうあだ名がついたらしいけど、
「こっちですか？」「いや、こっちじゃないよ、こっちだよ」（ウドちゃんネタ）
と勘違いした外人がいたかどうか。

レンタルサーバーはとりあえずロリポップ！でいいと思う。
安いし、対応も丁寧。何よりも分かりやすい。
自分の子どもに対する愛情のあまり、なるべく目立って他とは違う名前をつけたいのが親心。日本だと珍しい漢字や当て字を使ったりしますが、アメリカでは最近銃器メーカーや部品などの「鉄砲ネーム」を使う人が増えているそうです。
アメリカの命名サイト「Nameberry」によれば、こうした「鉄砲ネーム」のトップは「Gunner（銃を持つ人）」とのこと。スカンジナビア系の名前として「Gunnar（勇敢な戦士）」というポピュラーなものがあるのですが、これに似た名前として選ばれるケースが増えているようです。
他にも「トリガー」「シューター」「マグナム」といった部品名や銃器関連用語、さらには「レミントン」「ブローニング」「ベレッタ」など銃器メーカーの名前をつける人も増えているとか。メーカー名のほとんどは創業者の苗字なので、ファーストネームにすると「山田鈴木」のように苗字が重なってしまうような気がするのですがどうなのでしょうか。

とあるイギリスのアナウンサーが職人技……いや、神業とも言える報道をしたと世界中から称賛されている。なぜなら彼は、世界一長い地名をまったく噛まずにスラスラ喋ったからである！
アナウンサーがその地名を発したのは、天気予報でのこと。偶然にもウェールズ北部の島にある村で世界一地名が長い『ランヴァイル・プルグウィンギル・ゴゲリフウィルンドロブル・ランティシリオゴゴゴホ』を扱うことになった。

This version at Monmouth NJ, though an early recording, remains largely unchanged over more than two decades. Both the introduction and arrangement have held up well for us over the years. However, I think it’s safe to say that we’ve gotten a lot better at’sticking the landings’, to borrow a phrase from the Olympics.
