中学生の頃、アフロ・アメリカンの誕生からプリ・ブルース、ラグ・タイム、ジャグ・バンド、ブギ・ウギの成立あたりに興味をおぼえて、輸入レコードを買いまくりました。アーリー・デルタ・ブルース、ミシシッピ・ブルース、クラシック・ブルース、ゴスペル等はその次でしたかね。
ですからこういうのは久しぶりです。

このＣＤは米Yazooレーベルが、１９７６年に発売したＬＰ “Harmonica Blues: Great Harmonica Performances Of The 1920s And ’30s” を、１９９１年にＣＤ化した商品でして、収められている曲の雰囲気を一言でいえば、『サンフランシスコ湾ブルース』みたいなサウンド、ロバート・クラム（ジャケット・イラストはこの人の作です）が好みそうなタイプの音楽、というところでしょうか。
私はとくに２、７、１０曲目が気に入りました。

ハーモニカに着目したコンピレーションなのですが、楽器としてはポピュラーなものですね。しかし郷愁を感じさせる音のキラーアイテムではあります。
これは愛聴盤になりそうです。

Richard Hayman and Jan August – A Theme from “The Three Penny Opera”（Moritat）（1955/12/30）

Hayman conducts and August plays piano on this #11 charting instrumental version of Kurt Weill’s familiar tune from the German musical play “The Three Penny Opera,” which enjoyed a very successful off-Broadway revival during the mid-1950s. See also the Dick Hyman version as well as the vocal “Mack The Knife” by Louis Armstrong.

Recipe for a major hit record in 1947: a small Chicago-label release of a 34 year-old ballad performed by artificially-reverbed harmonicas? An unusual new sound for its time, this surprise smash by the instrumental trio spent 8 weeks as the country’s most-played juke box hit and spawned numerous cover versions, five of which are also included here （see Buddy Clark, Three Suns, Ted Weems, Art Lund and Clark Dennis）.
Note that the Harmonicats’ later Mercury label remake of “Peg” that has been commonly reissued did use the same arrangement but is a different recording. This posted version is the original hit.
