クリスマスが近づくとコンビニやスーパーマーケット、おもちゃ屋などにお菓子が詰められたブーツ型の容器が並ぶ。これらクリスマスブーツはサンタクロースやツリーとは異なり日本発祥で独自のものだ。
「外国の人には必ず驚かれます。クリスマスソックスのようなものですと伝えるとやっと分かってもらえます」と話すのは、約５０年前からクリスマスブーツを製造している株式会社近商物産企画室の野田さおりさんだ。
「ツリーのオーナメントに靴下やブーツがぶら下げられているのを見て、それを大きくしてお菓子を入れたらどうだろうと着想したのが始まりだそうです。以前はサンタクロースをあしらった、綿やキラキラ光るような装飾をしたブーツが多かったのですが、最近はブーツそのものは簡素で、テレビキャラクターなどの絵柄をつけたものも増えてきています」
近商物産がある滋賀県草津市の草津駅西口商店街では、クリスマスブーツ発祥の地を記念して「クリスマスブーツギャラリー」というイベントを昨年から開催している。同社製の組み立て式ブーツを３００円で購入してもらい、自由にデザインして地域の銀行やホテルのウインドウ、ロビーに展示、コンテストも行っている。
「発祥と言われていますが、確かな文献はありません。当時のクリスマスブーツも残っていないので伝聞でしかわかりませんが、ブーツの大きさや形は当時からほとんど変わっていないようです」（前出・野田さん）
東大阪市の株式会社浪花堂も、およそ５０年前からクリスマスブーツを作りつづけている老舗だ。二代目社長の小田慶明さんが先代から聞いた話によると、最初はクリスマス飾りの延長として始まったという。

いよいよクリスマスも間近。前日の２４日は日本海側は雪や雨が降りやすいですが、太平洋側は大体晴れる見込みです。２５日は日本海側の雪もやむ見込みで、クリスマスに日本海側で広く雪にならないのは久しぶりのことです。

クリスマスシーズンになると、アメリカでやたらテレビ放映される映画があります。

フランク・キャプラ監督による１９４６年製作の映画です。アメリカ人は全員知っているであろう作品で、クリスマスになるとテレビでヘビーローテーションされます。この映画が放映されると「ああ年末だな」と感じるそうです（笑）。
「自分なんか生まれてこなければよかった」と悲観して自殺しようとする主人公の前に、天使が現れて……というお話です。人生の意味について考えさせられる作品で、未見の人はぜひご覧ください。『三十四丁目の奇蹟』
こちらも１９４７年製作とずいぶん古い作品ですが、アメリカではクリスマスの定番中の定番となっていて、テレビでしつこく放映されます。「信じること」「クリスマスの意味」を描いた作品です。
マンハッタンの３４丁目にある百貨店・メイシーズを舞台として映画は始まります。クリスマス商戦用にサンタの扮装（ふんそう）をした老人が登場し、その人をめぐって一悶着が……というお話。『クリスマス・ストーリー』
日本では未公開ですが、アメリカ人なら誰でも知っていて、とても愛されているクリスマス映画です（１９８３年製作）。劇的なことは何も起こらないのですが、９歳のラルフィーくんを主人公に、その一家がクリスマスをどう過ごすかがほのぼのと、ユーモアたっぷりに描かれます。

スヌーピー、チャーリー・ブラウンなど、おなじみピーナッツの仲間のクリスマス物語です。１９６５年に製作されたアニメーションなのですが、アメリカではクリスマスになるとテレビで繰り返し放映されます。『ルドルフ 赤鼻のトナカイ』

イラクの首都バグダッド南部のキリスト教徒が多い地区で２５日、クリスマスのミサが終わったばかりの教会の近くで自動車爆弾が爆発するなどして、少なくとも計３４人が死亡し、５２人がけがをした。ロイター通信などが報じた。
警察当局によると、教会では、ミサを終えたキリスト教徒が別れの抱擁をしている最中に、駐車していた車が爆発したという。死者には女性や子どももいた。直前には混雑する市場でも爆発が２回起きた。犯行声明は出ていないが、イラクではアルカイダ系武装組織がキリスト教徒を狙った攻撃を繰り返している。
