Frank Weir with his Saxophone, Chorus and Orchestra – The Happy Wanderer(1954/05)
シングル “From Your Lips” のB面。

Specifically, it was the unique tone of the soprano saxophone that distinguished the recordings of British conductor Frank Weir and was featured memorably in his version of this 1954 hit from Germany (originally recorded by the Obernkirchen Children’s Choir). The other top-10 charted version of “The Happy Wanderer,” by Henri Rene, is also included in this 1954 posting.

Henri Rene’s Musette and Chorus – The Happy Wanderer(Val-De Ri, Val-De Ra)(1954/04)
行進のような足音のSEが入る。

This and the more popular Frank Weir version of the German tune (also posted) were the two “Happy Wanderer” recordings that dominated U.S. tastes during the spring and summer months of 1954. The original German-language international hit had been recorded by the Obernkirchen Children’s Choir.

The Obernkirchen Children’s Choir – The Happy Wanderer(Der Froehliche Wanderer)(1954)

Val-der-eeee! Val-der-aaah! Six months on the UK charts (peaking at #2), this version of “The Happy Wanderer” (sung in German) was also a major record hit in various other countries for the small youth choir from Schaumburg County in Germany. Composed in the mid-1940’s, the march-tempo’d tune enjoyed its greatest U.S. success in the recorded versions by Frank Weir (the one with the soprano sax) and Henri Rene, but Decca did also sell a number of copies of this original version (misspelling the town of Obernkirchen on the label).

Julie’s follow-up single “My Lady Loves To Dance” and his biggest hit “Eh, Cumpari” are also included in this collection.

Perry Como and The Fontane Sisters -(I Wonder Why)You’re Just In Love(1950/10/23)
orchestra conducted by Mitchell Ayres
2度目の引用。

This was the dominant recorded version of the biggest hit tune from Irving Berlin’s 1950 musical “Call Me Madam,” introduced on-stage by Ethel Merman and Russell Nype. The successful show ran 644 performances and earned Tony awards for Berlin (best original score), Merman (best actress in a musical) and Nype (best featured actor in a musical). Four other Como hits included in this 1951 collection are “Hello Young Lovers” “If” “Zing Zing–Zoom Zoom” and “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas.”

Swing And Sway with Sammy Kaye – Wanderin’(1950)
vocal: Tony Alamo & The Kaye Choir

This springtime hit of 1950 is performed by Don Cornell’s replacement with the Kaye band, Tony Alamo (not to be confused with the disgraced founder of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries, who died in prison in 2017). First recorded in 1928 by Vernon Dalhart, this folkish ballad is wrongly given sole composer label credit to bandleader Kaye. The melody was re-used by Tom Jones for his late-’60s hit “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again.”

Tony Pastor and his Orchestra – I Wonder, I Wonder, I Wonder(1947)
vocal: Tony Pastor

recorded March 7, 1947
One of several versions of the Eddy Howard hit that shared record sales and juke box play during the spring and summer months of ’47. Also posted to this channel are recordings of the song by Guy Lombardo (1947) and The Four Lads (1953).

Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians – I Wonder, I Wonder, I Wonder(1947)

Among Eddy’s most popular recordings, this one charted at #2 juke box and #3 sales in midyear 1947. Other Eddy hits in this collection are “My Adobe Hacienda” “Ragtime Cowboy Joe” “(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons” “Kate” and “An Apple Blossom Wedding.” Guy Lombardo’s also-popular version of “I Wonder, I Wonder, I Wonder” is included here.

During the 1947 theatrical run of the 20th Century Fox musical “I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now,” the title song enjoyed a major revival, spending three months–and reaching #1–on “Your Hit Parade.” Though two different recorded versions by Perry Como topped the sales figures, both the Ray Noble and Dinning Sisters releases also registered on the national radio airplay charts.

As had occurred earlier in the year with the song “Heartaches,” Decca again reissued an old Ted Weems track from their archives and saw it rise high on the popularity charts. The 20th Century Fox musical “I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now” entered the theaters just as that swinging 1939 recording featuring a young pre-stardom Perry Como was taking off. Competing with himself, Perry then recorded this contrasting new version of the song for RCA Victor, arranged and performed as a slow ballad. Both releases sold well and are included in this collection, as are the other 1947 Como hits “Chi-Baba Chi-Baba” “Sonata” and “When You Were Sweet Sixteen.”

 同会議所は、塩尻の新しい土産品として「ヒップリン」を発案したいと考えた。「尻」の形で塩尻産の食材を使うことなどが条件。この日はそれらを満たすかどうかを審査し、試食した。
