Benny Goodman and his Orchestra – Swing Into Spring(1958/03/24)

recorded in NYC February 25, 1958
A Goodman favorite from an early’58 session that included Doc Severinsen (trumpet), Hank Jones (piano) and Tony Mottola (guitar). The tune is remembered as the title for the Texaco-sponsored promotion that featured the Goodman band in two all-star television specials, the first on April 9, 1958 as part of the’Texaco Star Theater’ series and the second on April 10, 1959, tied in with the special “Swing Into Spring” Columbia LP, which sold for a buck at your friendly neighborhood Texaco station.

Gene Autry – Peter Cottontail(1950/03/13)

The big Easter holiday novelty of the 1950s was recorded by quite a number of artists for both the pop and country markets. Two of them reached the pop top-10 sales chart: Autry at a #5 peak and Mervin Shiner (also posted) at #8. Composers Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins are the same writing team that would provide Gene with his next big Christmas hit of “Frosty The Snowman” later in the year.

Did you have a lovely Easter break? I hope it wasn’t raining where you are as it was in 1953!
The Easter holiday, this year, was marred by the weather – people at the zoo were caught in the rain. In the bright spells, dinghy-sailors at Teddington enjoyed the strong breeze. Easter is always a popular time for weddings and this year was no exception. Kew Gardens were certainly not overcrowded and neither was Hampstead Heath. Brighton and Blackpool, usually crowded at Easter was deserted.
