みどりの日に寄す

お客さんが若葉寒（わかばざむ）という言葉を口にした。
私は使わない単語だったので、なにか新鮮な響きに聞こえた。

過ぎてしまったが５月１日の歌。

Out of Los Angeles, the lone single for Miss Lester on the Chattahoochee label. Originally composed by Eden Ahbez and Lee Esmond in 1957, the only known version of the tune is this rarity by Robie Lester. Wayne Shanklin receiving composer credit for this 1965 release could very well be simply due to his role as producer. While the Bossa Nova styled,’Green Flamingo’ was the intended plug side, it’s the flip,’Another Show Another Town’ that shines. The Joseph Van Winkle and Fred Darian penned tune had been issued in January 1964 by ROME SINGLETON on the Bud label and three months later in April 1964 issued by FREDDY DARIAN on the tiny Pebble Records label. Both of those other versions utilized the same backing track featured on Robie Lester’s version. Some kind of arrangement between producer, Wayne Shanklin Jr. and Fred Darian was made for use of the track and Robie’s whimsical vocal delivery is a nice contrast to Fred Darian’s smooth tenor version. Robie Lester was quite active behind the scenes in the 1960’s Los Angeles music biz. Voice overs, Disney projects and along with singles issued under her name there were others such as Miss Lester double tracked as the DIVIDENDS issued on Bonanza Records. One of Lester’s most cherished recordings is that of her work on the Rankin-Bass animated production of’Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ as the character of Miss Sarah/Mrs. Kris Kringle.
The passing of the years has had many to assume the voice of Gin Gillete on the rare and collectible single issued on Musikon Records to be that of Robie Lester who was listed as producer. Gin Gillette is confirmed to be Virginia Boyle Carllile （sic）, wife of Thumbs Carlyle （sic）. Gin is short for Virginia and Gillette, Wyoming is her hometown. Gillette also recorded the tune,’Now That You’re Leavin’ Me’ as Thumbs Carlyle and Ginny O’Boyle on Epic Records in 1962.

Contrasting with the mainstream Tom Jones hit of late 1966/early 1967, the sad ballad first appeared as this’Nashville-sound’ arrangement. But within weeks of its release, a cover version by Porter Wagoner captured all of the attention and rose to #4 on Billboard’s C&W chart

The one and only single issued by then sixteen year old actress, Melody Patterson who was just starting her newly acquired role as’Wrangler Jane’ in the ABC-TV series,’F Troop’. It’s interesting that the underage Patterson managed to snag the acting gig with a fake birth certificate but was so professional and well received by the viewers that her age snafu was worked around and accommodated. Also interesting is that not only did the TV series debut in September 1965 but her Warner Bros. single,’You’re The One’ b/w’Meadowgreen’ did as well. In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, the television arm of Warner Bos. Pictures was known for not wasting any time in getting their hot new TV actors and actresses behind a microphone in a recording studio. Connie Stevens was one of their most successful and curiously, while Melody’s version of’You’re The One’ was sung in a somewhat lower register, the flipside,’Meadowgreen’ her vocal delivery was sung with the same breathy, wispy style that helped Miss Stevens sell quite a few records. Recorded at Western Recorders in August 1965, the tune is quite dreamy and the beautifully orchestrated backing track is played to perfection by L.A.’s Wrecking Crew. It is also noteworthy that the ending fade of the backing track is an almost note for note recreation of the fade heard on the Walker Brothers recording of,’The Seventh Dawn’ which was recorded four blocks west on Sunset Boulevard at RCA Victor Studios in January 1965.

５月４日はラムネの日
日本で初めてレモン水（レモネード）が製造されたのは、1865年（慶応元年）に長崎の藤瀬半兵衛という人によるという紹介はしましたが、ラムネの製造販売をはじめたのは、東京の千葉勝五郎という人物で、1872年（明治５年）の５月４日とも言われています。
ここから５月４日は「ラムネの日」とされていますが、長崎の藤瀬半兵衛が初めて製造販売した日がはっきりしていれば、その日がラムネの日になったかもしれません。

昭和の日とは「天皇誕生日」という祝日で、平成元年（１９８９）から「みどりの日」となり、平成１９年（２００７）より「昭和の日」とすることになった。本来は昭和天皇を祝う日でもある。（大正や明治はどうなるという考え方もあるが、時代背景と世間の風潮を考慮して現状の形となっているのでしょう）
