Ray Starling conducting the N.Y. Sound Stage One Orch. featuring Delores Clark – He’s Gone(1966/02)

Born in England in 1933, Ray Starling moved to the United States when he was sixteen. Having studied the piano when he was a child, he promptly took up playing the trumpet after his family set up residency in New York. Ray excelled in various musical instruments as well as learning orchestration, composition and theory. He would go on to join and play in bands led by Kai Winding, Ray Eberly, Claude Thornhill, Buddy Rich and others with many, many club dates. In 1961 he began playing and touring with Stan Kenton’s orchestra as well as writing some wonderful arrangements. When the orchestra disbanded, Ray and band mate and saxophone player, Joel Kaye formed the New York Sound Stage One Orchestra. The band was a vehicle to showcase Ray’s elaborate and intricate arrangements. The orchestra was quite large and didn’t travel but kept busy in around New York City. At times the orchestra backed several well known singers such as Tony Bennett and Ray’s wife Jo Lea, was also a singer with the orchestra. The whole concept was really quite elegant but sadly, rather short lived. An albums worth of fantastic material was recorded in 1965-1966 and remained unissued until the tracks were discovered and presented in a CD compilation with a collection of Joel Kaye material from 1976 & 1981. There was one curious 45 rpm coupling that label credit was given to Ray Starling & The New York Sound Stage One Orchestra. ‘Living To Please’ b/w/’He’s Gone’ first came out the pressing plant in 1965 with label vocal credit given below Ray as’Featuring The STARLETTS”. The disc wish on the Antares label but had no catalog number. In early 1966, a new recording of the track was pressed again with no catalog number and vocal credit given below ray this time as’Featuring DELORES CLARK’. A repressing of the disc finally included the catalog number of Antares AX101 but this time the label gave top billing to Delores Clark above in small font,’Featuring RAY STARLING conducting the New York Sound Stage One Orchestra’. Regardless of the label text, both sides are deliciously big, bold and brassy musical numbers. The A-side,’Living To Please’ has a backing track with the sound of being in a 1960’s’James Bond’ movie while background vocals chant a repetitive’Sha-la-la-la’ throughout. ‘He’s Gone’ is really quite classy, and unknown vocalist Delores Clark can be imagined singing while enveloped within a single spotlight, wearing a form fitting sparkly sequined gown on a stage in front of a large orchestra. Really good stuff within the grooves of this sickeningly obscure disc.
