ロサンゼルスはカリフォルニア州の南部に位置し、西は太平洋に面する。広大な平地が広がるが、大きな河川は流れておらず、コロラド川などから水路を引っ張っている。市の北東にモハーベ砂漠、北西にコースト山脈、東にシエラネバダ山脈がそれぞれ広がる。
衛星都市は３０以上を有し、ロサンゼルス都市圏は北はパームデール、西はヴェンチューラ、東はサンバーナーディーノ、南はサンディエゴ都市圏との境界であるエスコンディードあたりに至る。有名な都市にアナハイム、リバーサイド、ロングビーチ、サンタアナなどがあり、これらはいずれも人口３０万人を超える。なお、カリフォルニア州にはサンフランシスコも大都市圏（７００万人）を形成しているが、サンフランシスコとは約５００ｋｍ離れているため（東京－大阪間位）、基本的に商圏における競合は起こりえない。＜ロサンゼルス – Wikipedia＞
