Sue Raney – Who’s Afraid?（1966/07）
シングル “Little Things Mean A Lot” のＢ面。

Entering the recording biz with Capitol Records in 1957 at the age of seventeen, Sue Raney would continue recording and performing heavily throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s. She issued her recordings over six different record companies with her mid 1960’s output issued on the Liberty Records subsidiary label, Imperial Records （January 1966 through November 1968）. Presented here is the flipside to the second of her six single output with that label. The B-side to’Little Things Mean Alot’,’Who’s Afraid?’ was composed by Paul Webster and Alex North for the 1966 film,’Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?’. Recorded in Hollywood at the Annex Studios, Marshall Leib produced, and Gene Page was the arranger for the session. Miss Raney was not alone in recording the song as there were dozens of versions released as singles and also album cuts for a substantial list of vocalists and musicians. The composers surely must have enjoyed the publishing royalties for the song. Notable other versions are by Keely Smith for Reprise Records, Bobby Darin for Atlantic Records, Harry Betts Orchestra with the Blossoms on vocals for 20th Century-Fox Records and a version by Mimi Hines for Decca Records.

映画『Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?（バージニア・ウルフなんかこわくない）』（米1966/06/21公開）より。

During three sessions at RCA Victor Recording Studios in Hollywood; two in August 1966 and the other, one month later, several tracks were recorded that would ultimately fill a 20th Century-Fox LP entitled,’Fabulous Film Themes’ featuring the Harry Betts Orchestra and Chorus issued in January 1967. Before the album appeared there were three singles released. The first two from September 1966 were’Two Lovers’ b/w’Who’s Afraid’ credited to the Harry Betts Orchestra and Chorus and the other disc,’Way, Way Out’ b/w’Modesty Blaise’ being credited to The Girls with the Harry Betts Orchestra. The final single from early January 1967 was,’Hawaii’ b/w’All’ credited simply to the Harry Betts Orchestra. The ten known tracks recorded for the LP were produced by Jackie Mills with a large orchestra including members of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ providing the backing tracks. The talents of horn players, Jack Sheldon, Sonny Criss, Don Fagerquist and Jack Nimitz were also noted and showcased. Uncredited however, were the lovely voices of the female vocal group, the Blossoms whose classy harmonies rounded out and completed the lavish project. I supposes the label credit on the second single as’The Girls’ was as close to being acknowledged as it was going to get. The group was in continual motion throughout the Los Angeles studios at that time, lending their musical talent to many a recording whether credit was given or not and they certainly made a lucrative career at it. Presented here is the flip to the first 20th Century-Fox single with a beautiful version of,’Who’s Afraid?’ from the motion picture,’Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?’ So often on the Blossoms recordings, Darlene Love is the dominate voice heard where here, it is primarily that of Jean King along with Fanita James in the forefront. The album that’Who’s Afraid’ is included on really is a stunner where not one track is a throw-away. Highly recommended.

昭和２０年の壊れ方は、物理的破壊と経済的崩壊の両方でした。
三河地震（同年１月１３日）がありましたから三重県津市を中心とした地域では、空襲＋巨大地震の二重の被害です。
ハイパーインフレと 新円切替≒デノミで 戦時国債やお札は紙切れとなり、殆どの日本人はその日暮らしを強いられることになったわけですが、
まずは食い物ということで、農家がとりあえず立場が強かった。
戦中は疎開先でイジメられ、戦後はタケノコ生活で足元見られて、それで都会人は田舎が嫌いになっちゃったんです（笑）
食糧の配給制度は敗戦後にはまともに機能しなかったらしいですね。箍が緩んだというか、モラルハザードを起こしたというか。マァ無理はない、恃みとする国家が無くなっちゃたんだから。

養老氏の云うクラッシュは漠然と昭和２０年夏のそれをイメージしての発言のようです。
あのときの日本人と今の日本人とではかなり違ってます。世界観・意識の面でもそうですが、当時では考えられない贅沢を経験してしまっている。そしておしなべて小狡く利己的になっていると思います。

敗戦後、天皇制が存続したことで国民の求心力・団結力がかろうじて維持されたことは、これは間違いない。
しかし現代において皇室はそのような影響力をほとんど持っていません。そういう点も昭和２０年のクラッシュとは大いに異なるところです。

３・１１ではボランティアをする側がいました。もし今 経済的クラッシュが来れば、国民にその余裕も余力もなくなるでしょう。
大金持ちのミナサンはというと、資産を海外に移すなどして盤石の態勢をすでに整え終わってる。その財力が崩壊後の再建に活かされればいいいのですが、どうでしょうかねぇ。

　携帯電話の基地局から出る電磁波と、耳鳴りや頭痛などの症状に因果関係は認められない――。宮崎県延岡市の住民３０人が健康悪化を理由に、ＫＤＤＩ（本社・東京）に基地局の操業差し止めを求めた訴訟の判決が１７日、宮崎地裁延岡支部であり、太田敬司裁判長は原告側の訴えを退けた。

携帯電話と癌の関連性の調査に乗り出したのが、イギリスの携帯通信健康調査プログラムだ。政府と通信業界の協力を得て、１３６０万ポンド（約２３億円）を費やした１１年に及ぶ調査の結果、携帯電話と基地局、および各無線通信機器から生じる電磁波は、癌の原因にならないことが証明されたのである。
これに加えて、電磁波と子供への健康被害も関連性がないことが分かった。今までは、妊娠中に携帯電話の基地局近辺に居住していると、生まれた子供は小児白血病や脳腫瘍、中枢神経系腫瘍になりやすいとの説がささやかれてきた。しかし癌患者の小児１万６５００人の病状を調査したところ、基地局近辺に住む小児の病状は悪化していなかったことが明らかになっている。
しかし２０１１年にＷＨＯ（世界保健機関）は、１日３０分の携帯電話使用は発癌性のリスクを４０パーセント高めると警告している。ＷＨＯは対策として、電話の使用頻度を減らすかハンドフリーセットを使ったり、メールに切り替えるなどの方法を推奨している。
