This east coast recording is the seventh of only eight known singles issued by Ruben Wright. A musician, composer and former bandleader from Philadelphia, Mr. Wright began his musical career as a member and pianist in an early 1950’s group known as the Uniques. That ensemble morphed into the Capris and signed with Gotham Records. Wright composed the tune,’God Only Knows’ which the group recorded in 1954 that featured a female singer by the name of Renee Hinton and managed to achieve a regional hit with. The Capris split up and Wright set out on a solo career. A single was released on Wynne Records in 1958 followed by a second disc issued on the Lancer label in 1959. In the early 1960’s, Ruben contributed his talents as a member of the Manhattans who sang background vocals. In 1964, He signed with Capitol Records and between December 1964 and November 1967 issued five singles with the label. The last known Ruben Wright single release was from 1969 on the Virtue label.’When The World Is Ready’ was Ruben’s final Capitol release. The tune was from the soundtrack of the Paramount motion picture,’The Long Duel’ and was first recorded by British vocalist, Vince Hill and issued as a single in the USA in Tower Records in October 1967, one month before the Ruben Wright version. The flip side was the often recorded Jenny Lou Carson and Al Hill (a pen name used by Fred Wise, Kathleen Twomey, and Ben Weisman) composition,’Let Me Go Lover’ which had first been made a hit by Joan Weber in 1954 for Columbia Records. This version by Ruben Wright is a slick meshing of pop and R&B and although documented to have been recorded in 1967, it certainly does sound like an earlier recording.

ニュージーランド南島の北岸に位置するゴールデン湾のフェアウェル岬の浜辺で13日、170頭以上のゴンドウクジラが浅瀬に打ち上げられ、身動きが取れなくなっているのが見つかり、現在、動物保護活動家らによる救助活動が行われている。
ニュージーランド環境保全局(DOC)によると、座礁したゴンドウクジラ198頭のうち、24頭はすでに死亡したという。DOCは、13日夕方の満潮を待って、140人のボランティアとともにクジラを泳げる位置まで戻すとしている。

抜き差しならぬ昨今の韓国経済。その凋落の根本原因は韓国人の気性と地政学的位置の2つに求められると思う。
竹島の不法占拠だけでは足りないと思ってか、新聞記者の「人質」までとって、かかる要求をしてくるのだから、不信感は拭いがたい。

ミンストレルス・ショーの白人演者が顔を黒く塗り白人客を相手に歌う演目から広まった童謡風バラッドで、「ジミー・クラック・コーン」別名「ブルー・テール・フライ」というのがある。
落馬事故で白人の主人を亡くした黒人奴隷の嘆きを歌った素朴な内容だが、これがフォーク・ミュージック・リバイバルの初期に当たる1940年代後期に再発見され、伝承歌として知られるようになった。

ラッツ&スター(シャネルズ)の黒塗りは、黒人ドゥーワップ・グループへの尊敬と愛であることは説明するまでもない。つまりはアマチュア時代の彼らの真剣さでもあるし、日本人の平均的な肌の色(昔でいうところの肌色)じゃ、ドゥーワップ・グループとして格好がつかんだろうという、若気の至り、浅慮でもあるんだけどね。
彼等がアマチュア時代に歌ってたこの歌をまた聞きたくなったよ。

Jose Curbelo : Biography
Pianist, bandleader, and manager José Curbelo was born in Havana; he had a Cuban mother and a father who had been raised in America and played violin with the Havana Philharmonic. At eight, Curbelo began two years of study under composer Pedro Menendez and then attended the Molinas Conservatory in Havana. At 16, he played in bands around Havana and helped form the Havana Riverside Orchestra. Following that group’s tour of South America, he made his way to New York in 1940. In New York, Curbelo found work in various bands and appeared at the El Morocco, among other places. José Morand, a bandleader who later started the Fiesta label, gave him an early start. In 1942 Curbelo formed his own band and played initially at La Conga. A year at New York’s Havana Madrid (1943-1944) was followed by stints at Zanzibar and then an upstate gig at Grossingers Resort in the Catskills. The next couple of years he spent in Miami at the Clover Club and the Latin Quarter and in New York at La Conga again, Bill Miller’s Riviera, and eventually the China Doll. In New York, at times, Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, and Candido joined the band. Further engagements included in New York (La Martinique, Roseland, the Palladium, and the Savoy), in Miami (the Sans Souci and Ciros), in Las Vegas (the Sahara Hotel), and in Baltimore (the Chanticleer Club). In 1953 he reduced the band to a sextet and added jazzmen such as Al Cohn on tenor sax and Jack Hitchcock on trombone and vibes. Famous arrangers for the band include Rene Hernandez, Chico O’Farrill, Puente, and Cohn. Like many of the top Cuban bandleaders of the day, Curbelo could lay claim to classical training as a youth, a variety of Latin influences as a journeyman professional, and being part of New York’s Latin jazz scene. During the’60s, he became an important and prominent manager and booking agent for Latin music artists. 海外ではどのようなバレンタインデーを過ごしているのでしょうか。
欧米などの西洋諸国では性別関係なくプレゼントを贈り合います。カードやチョコレートが一般的ですが、店頭にチョコレートが山盛り、というようなバレンタイン商戦はありません。
男性は花束を贈る人が多いようで、花屋が一番忙しい時期なので1-2週間前から予約が必要です。
また、日本では好きな人に想い伝える告白デーでもありますが、欧米ではカップルがパートナーと過ごす日なので告白などの習慣はありません。
どちらかというと、男性がレストランを予約したり花束を買ったりと頑張らないといけません。
なので、欧米の男性が日本のバレンタイン事情を知ると、「なんて良い日なんだ!」と感激するそうです。

Out of Hollywood, this disc recorded in May 1967 in studio ‘A’ at Gold Star Recording Studios has lead singer of the Paris Sisters, Priscilla out front and center as a solo act. Composed by Miss Paris, ‘He Noticed Me’ is a brilliant piece of two and a half minutes of recorded bliss. ‘Wrecking Crew’ guitarist, Don Peake, created a shimmering Spectoresque and somewhat haunting arrangement that really compliments Priscilla’s intoxicating, breathy and seductive vocals. The first of two singles pulled from her York LP entitled, ‘Priscilla Paris Sings Herself’, ‘He Noticed Me’ shamefully went by unnoticed.
Priscilla Paris died from a fall in her home in Paris, France in 2004.
