(debuted late’81) 1982 Pop Chart Peaks: Record World 9, Billboard & Cash Box 10 – A/C Peak: 8 – UK Peaks: 1 (MM), 2 (BMRB, NME)
The “Stars On 45” and “Hooked On Classics” releases were among the most notable successes which helped spur the early-1980s medley recording fad. This Top 10 single was an edit of the longer lead track from the first “Hooked On Classics” LP, conducted by arranger-musician Louis Clark, who was also known for his work with Electric Light Orchestra. A label error failed to include “1812 Overture,” which follows “March Of The Toreadors.”

* While the so-called “Official” UK singles chart history from this period utilizes data from only one of the three existing national singles charts (BMRB, as published in Music Week and in which this record did not reach the top), for historical reference our channel also credits as “#1 UK hit” any title which achieved that peak in one or more of the other two then-commonly-referenced charts (New Musical Express & Melody Maker).

Roy Orbison – It’s Over(1964/03)イッツ・オーヴァー

Jimmie Rodgers – It’s Over(1966/04)

Having been in the recording business since 1958, Gene Pitney would eventually achieve hit-making status at the age of 21 after signing with then newly formed Musicor Records in 1961. Throughout the 1960’s he would find success with records such as,’Town Without Pity’,’(The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance’,’Only Love Can Break A Heart,’24 Hours From Tulsa’,’Mecca’,’It Hurts To Be In Love’ and I’m Gonna’ Be Strong’ to name a few. Recording, stage and television performances, touring the world and composing hits for others,’Rubber Ball’ for Bobby Vee,’Today’s Teardrops’ for Roy Orbison,’He’s A Rebel’ for the Crystals and’Hello Mary Lou’ for Ricky Nelson, Gene Pitney enjoyed many accolades. By the 1970’s, recording had slowed down but Mr. Pitney kept busy in Europe where he had a large following and fan base. In the US, at an April 1977 session at Larrabee Sound Studios in West Hollywood, California, Gene recorded three tracks of which two would become the A&B sides of an Epic Records single. Produced by Jerry Fuller, the A-side was a medley of two well known songs both entitled,’It’s Over’. Roy Orbison and Bill Dees were the composers of Roy’s big hit in 1964 and Jimmie Rogers composed and recorded his song with the same title in 1966. The backing track of Gene’s’It’s Over’ medley was a powerful and atmospheric, lushly orchestrated extravaganza that would build and ebb with emotive tension culminating with an explosive finish. It is probably one of Gene Pitney’s finest performances put to recording tape. The single was pressed and released in June of 1977 but tanked in the US. What an absolute shame. Epic did issue the record in Germany, Holland, Italy, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Joe Moss and his Orchestra – Banking On The Weather / A Great Big Bunch Of You(1932)
vocal: Sammy Fain and Audrey Marsh

recorded in NYC July 15, 1932
From Columbia’s short-lived 18000-D series, this unusual running time of 4:34 on one side of a ten-inch 78rpm disc was part of the company’s “longer playing record” experiment undertaken in 1932.

Frank Trumbauer & his Orchestra – Medley Of Isham Jones’ Dance Hits(1932)
vocal: Johnny Blake & Helen Rowland

recorded in NYC April 5, 1932
Nearly five minutes of listenable dance music is squeezed onto one side of this 10-inch 78, one of only a few such discs issued as part of Columbia’s 18000-D series, their short-lived experiment with a finer-grooved, longer-playing commercial single.
On The Alamo – instrumental
Swingin’ Down The Lane – voc. Helen Rowland (spelled “Roland” on the label)
I’ll See You In My Dreams – voc. Johnny Blake

New Mayfair Orchestra – “The Cat And The Fiddle”-Selection Parts 1 & 2(1932)
conducted by Ray Noble
vocal: Webster Booth

recorded March 8, 1932
Recording as the New Mayfair Orchestra with vocalist Webster Booth, Noble gives us a two-sided 12-incher containing seven tunes from the successful Jerome Kern-Otto Harbach stage musical “The Cat And The Fiddle,” which opened on Broadway in 1931, in London 1932, and in 1934 made it to the big screen as a pleasant Jeanette MacDonald-Ramon Navarro vehicle for MGM.
Side 1: I Watch The Love Parade, She Didn’t Say Yes, Try To Forget, A New Love Is Old, Poor Pierro
Side 2: The Night Was Made For Love, One Moment Alone, Finale (She Didn’t Say Yes)

Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra – Dance Music from’Hot-Cha’ and’Face The Music’(1932)
vocal: Mildred Bailey, Red McKenzie, King’s Jesters

recorded in NYC March 2, 1932
Two Whiteman medleys–recorded and issued back-to-back on one side of a 10-inch gold-label RCA Victor’Program Transcription’ disc. Manufactured not as a’broadcast transcription’ for radio use, this series of early 33 1/3 LP’s was marketed toward the consumer. For additional information, check out the’transcription disc’ entry in Wikipedia.
Here we have eight minutes of Whiteman music, two medleys, each of which he had also recorded earlier in a slightly different version for release over two sides of a standard 12-inch Victor 78 #36050. The audio source used for this video is an undated (post-1932) RCA Victor test pressing.
Hot-Cha: Lupe Velez, Bert Lahr, Buddy Rogers, and Eleanor Powell were among the “Hot-Cha” cast. It opened 3-8-32 and ran 119 performances, with music composed by Brown & Henderson. The songs featured on this Whiteman medley are:
1 You Can Make My Life A Bed Of Roses (Marry Me)
2 There I Go Dreaming Again (vocal by Mildred Bailey)
3 Say (vocal by Red McKenzie)
Face The Music: The Moss Hart-Irving Berlin political satire opened 2-17-32 for 165 performances, included Mary Boland in the cast, and introduced a couple of Berlin’s memorable depression-era tunes:
1 Soft Lights And Sweet Music
2 I Say It’s Spinach (And The Hell With It) (vocal by The King’s Jesters)
3 On A Roof In Manhattan
4 Let’s Have Another Cup O’ Coffee (vocal by Red McKenzie)

Abe Lyman and his California Orchestra – Of Thee I Sing–Dance Medley(1932)
vocal: Phil Neely, Frank Sylvano and Dick Robertson

recorded in NYC January 30, 1932
A 12-inch Brunswick medley of the familiar Gershwin showtunes “Of Thee I Sing,” “Who Cares,” and “Love Is Sweeping The Country” (but good luck finding any other period commercial recordings of that third title). The musical “Of Thee I Sing” (book by George S. Kaufman & Morrie Riskynd, score by George & Ira Gershwin) opened the day after Christmas 1931, played 441 performances, and starred Victor Moore.
Johnson-Shirley ADBORAF notes that due to the presence of Bennie Krueger and four different vocalists at this session, it’s possible that this and the other titles from that date were actually performed by the ARC house band using Lyman’s name.
Session data also indicates that some weeks earlier (January 8th), both this and the flipside (Medley from “The Laugh Parade”) had been recorded in longer-duration tracks that were issued on a fine-groove version of the same-numbered Brunswick 20103. The “Of Thee I Sing” side purportedly ran 5:35 as opposed to the 4:33 standard-groove duration heard on this post.

Nat Shilkret conducting the Victor Orchestra – “Music In The Air” Medley(Pts. 1 & 2)(1932)
solo vocals & chorus

recorded in NYC December 21, 1932
The Kern-Hammerstein standards “I’ve Told Ev’ry Little Star” and “The Song Is You” highlight a nine-minute selection of tunes from the 1932 Broadway musical “Music In The Air,” issued over two sides of this 12-inch 78rpm platter, one of RCA Victor’s special’picture disc’ releases with images covering the entire playing surface of both sides. To construct these, a shellac core was sandwiched between two illustrated sheets, which were then coated with clear plastic upon which the recording was pressed.
Due to the different physical composition of the disc, playback’surface roar’ tends to be greatly enhanced in comparison to Victor’s usually good-quality 78rpm product. Hopefully any digital artifacts you may notice from my somewhat heavy-handed noise-reduction procedure on this track are not too distracting, as I attempted to reach a comfortable listening compromise.
The photo profiles pictured on side 2 represent actors who appeared in the Broadway production. The actual vocalists heard on this recording are shown below. Shilkret also recorded these same selections, but as a different take, for release on one side of the 12-inch Victor LP 67-2000 (the better-known “A Night With Paul Whiteman At The Biltmore” medley on the flip).

Victor Young and The Brunswick Orchestra – Gems From “The Band Wagon”–Parts 1 & 2(1931)
Instrumental with Vocal Choruses(Munn, Rowland, Parker, Luther & trio)

recorded in NYC July 31, 1931
Side 1 – Dancing In The Dark, High And Low, Sweet Music, I Love Louisa
Side 2 – I Love Louisa, New Sun In The Sky, Confession, Dancing In The Dark
A two-sided medley of songs from the outstanding Howard Dietz-Arthur Schwartz score for the 1931 musical revue “The Band Wagon,” with a book by George S. Kaufman and a cast headed by Fred & Adele Astaire, Helen Broderick, Tilly Losch, and Frank Morgan. On this recording, vocals are performed by Frank Munn, Helen Rowland, Jack Parker, Frank Luther, and the Woodyard Trio.
You won’t hear the song “That’s Entertainment,” which wasn’t composed until many years later for the 1953 movie “The Band Wagon,” also starring Fred Astaire but sharing little more than the title and a few of the tunes with the original revue. However, you will hear the delightfully adult “Confession,” which has understandably been largely absent from mass media exposure over the years.

Ben Selvin & his Orchestra – Selections From “Hollywood Revue Of 1929″(1929)

recorded in NYC August 29, 1929
“Singin’ In The Rain” “Your Mother And Mine” and “Orange Blossom Time” are heard in this medley. 23 years before MGM would release their classic 1952 film “Singin’ In The Rain,” that title song had reigned as one of the last major hit tunes of the Roaring 20s. Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards made it famous on record ( https://youtu.be/T2yFwTOPkZk ) and introduced it on-screen in the early musical “The Hollywood Revue Of 1929,” which showed off the “talkie” talents of many of MGM’s top stars.

Kathy Kirby – I’ll Get By(As Long As I Have You)(1963)

Ink Spots – I’ll Get By(As Long As I Have You)(1944)

One of the popular motion pictures of early 1944 was “A Guy Named Joe,” in which this 1928 song was featured. Because record companies keep an eye out for that sort of thing, Columbia reissued a 1941 recording of “I’ll Get By” by Harry James and Dick Haymes, which became a strong #1 seller. Decca’s entry was this typical Bill Kenny-Ink Spots arrangement, which reached top-10 on the pop and R&B charts.

Harry James and his Orchestra – I’ll Get By(As Long As I Have You)(1944)
vocal: Dick Haymes

recorded in 1941
Written in 1928, “I’ll Get By” reappeared in’44 and spent four weeks at #2 on “Your Hit Parade,” thanks to the song’s inclusion in the popular movie “A Guy Named Joe” and to this three year-old recording reissued by Columbia Records during The Recording Ban. It had originally been waxed by the James band in April 1941 and issued on Columbia 36285 before vocalist Dick Haymes was well known. By 1944, he was a major singing star and the new issue 36698 became one of the year’s biggest, spending six weeks atop the nation’s juke box charts. See also the Ink Spots version.

The Four King Sisters – I’ll Get By(As Long As I Have You)(1940)
orchestra conducted by Alvino Rey

recorded in NYC August 8, 1940
1944 Billboard Jukebox Chart Peak: 12
Written in 1928, “I’ll Get By” reappeared in’44 and spent four weeks at #2 on “Your Hit Parade,” thanks to the song’s inclusion in the movie hit “A Guy Named Joe” and to various popular 78s available in the record stores. Due to both Columbia and Victor-Bluebird still currently enduring the infamous’Recording Ban’ (AFM union strike) in early 1944, they resorted to reissuing previous-released versions of the song. Thus, Columbia’s 1941 waxing by Harry James & Dick Haymes belatedly achieved the #1 spot on the national best-sellers chart, and this 1940 recording by The King Sisters & Alvino Rey also enjoyed some success. Decca had previously settled with the musicians union and recorded an also-popular new version by the Ink Spots.

Ruth Etting – I’ll Get By(As Long As I Have You)(1929)

recorded in NYC February 11, 1929
Popular early recording of the standard, which made a major comeback in 1944 with recordings by Harry James and The Ink Spots (due primarily to the song’s being featured in the movie hit “A Guy Named Joe”).
