Dee Dee Sharp – Mashed Potato Time(1962/01)
ディー・ディー・シャープ – マッシュ・ポテト・タイム

Bearing no slight resemblance to the Marvelettes’ recent “Please Mr. Postman,” this dance hit reached #1 on two of the three national trade pop record charts. Dee Dee’s (unbilled) appearance on Chubby Checker’s “Slow Twistin'” hit was also being heard during the same period as “Mashed Potato Time.”

Pat Boone & The Girlfriends – Mashed Potato Time
from the album “Boss Beat!”(1964)

Dot 25594 – stereo LP, Dot 3594 – mono LP, Dot 594 – stereo 33 1/3 rpm seven inch jukebox disc
Here we have one of the standout tracks on a 1964 Dot LP produced and arranged by David Gates that featured Pat Boone belting out covers of 12 hits of the day. The Philadelphia based recording made a hit by Dee Dee Sharp,’Mashed Potato Time’, gets a west coast treatment as it jumps from the groves with a backing track performed flawlessly by L.A.’s famed’Wrecking Crew’ who are fortified with perfect background vocals provided by the Girlfriends.
While he has been given a lot of grief for being squeaky clean and ripping off original R&B songs and recording cover versions and issuing them with a national record company where they became hits that overshadowed the real deal, the guy has managed to record different styles of music and reinvent himself more than once over the course of his long and colorful musical career. In the 1990’s, tanned, buff and wearing a flattering form a fitting leather ensemble designed by the same guy who stitched up the one Elvis wore in 1968, Pat Boone recorded an album containing covers of heavy metal hits with classy, big band, jazzy arrangements. It was well received and a big seller and although Boone was banished temporarily from the Christian music scene where he was then prominently situated at that time, he would eventually be welcomed back to the fold. Most recently, at 86 years old he came to the forefront in 2020 during the worldwide riots and lockdowns with his composition,’Can’t We Get Along’ sung with stunning, emotional soulfulness by Wendy Moten. It’s a highly recommended recording that along with video of Ms. Moten performing it, there is a moving music video to view as well.
Much respect, Mr. Boone…….

Bobby Freeman – C’mon And Swim(1964/06)カモン・アンド・スイム

Pop Chart Peaks: Billboard 5, Cash Box 6, Record World 8
Six years after his 1958 debut hit “Do You Want To Dance,” Bobby returned to the top 10 with this song about one of the various “fad dances” of the ’60s that never really caught on.

Don Brandon – Doin’ The Swim(1964/03)
ビーチ・ボーイズ・スタイル。

Recorded in studio’3′ at Hollywood’s Western Recorders, this is the first of two singles issued by Don Brandon on the Dot label. Brandon had issued three singles prior to this disc; one on Lancelot and the other two on Challenge but the two Dot singles attained their collectability due to the surf theme and possible Brian Wilson involvement. Although clocking in a brief 1:47,’Doin’ The Swim’ chugs along with an energetic Surf meets Spector arrangement for the Gary Usher composed and produced session featuring the musical talents of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ and Western engineer, Chuck Britz. Gary Usher was quite busy in the L.A. music scene during the 1960’s both composing, producing and arranging and searching out and having a listen to his many projects is highly recommended.

The Whispers – The Dip(1965/06)
Composer: Nicholas Caldwell

Formed in 1963 in Watts, California, this is the third of a dozen singles issued on the Dore label by the Whispers. Recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios in April 1965 and issued in June of that year, the Nicholas Caldwell composition of’The Dip’ is a fine example of classic mid 1960’s L.A. soul. The passing of the decades has fueled the fire of collectors’ desire in obtaining an original copy of this fine dancefloor filler. Clocking in at two and a half minutes, the Whispers deliver their harmonic vocals with perfection above the Gene Page brassy, drum laden arrangement provided by an ensemble of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’. The group left Dore in 1969, and in 1970, the company reissued the previously recorded’It Only Hurts For A Little While’ from 1964 backed with’The Dip’ as Dore 842. The group then recorded for Soul Clock and Janus Records before making it to mega-hit status when they signed with Solar Records in 1975. Big hits such as,’And The Beat Goes On’,’It’s A Love Thing’, and’Rock Steady’ were to follow. In an attempt to cash in on the Whispers newfound fame with Solar Records, the powers that were at Dore Records dusted off the groups 1964 recording of’Never Again’ and their 1965 recording of’As I Sit Here’, added a few more instruments to the tracks and released the coupling as Dore 960 in 1980. Dore also quickly assembled the groups’ 1960s recordings for the label, overdubbed incidental instrumentation to’update’ the original tracks and compiled an LP entitled,’The Whispers – Shhhh’. The reissued single of’Never Again’ fell through the cracks but the compilation LP managed to sell well in Oldies record stores due to the fact that the Whispers Dore recordings up until that point could only be found on not very easily obtainable original 45 RPM singles.
