The last of only six singles to be issued on Lee Hazlewood’s Eden Records between 1962 and 1963 the last of the three discs that Ramona King’s name would be featured on while signed with the label. Composed by Edwin and Alvin Johnson (who were members of the vocal group, the Souvenirs as well as recording as the Johnson Brothers and Edwin and Alvin), the session for’Ballyhoo” was booked at Western Recorders in Hollywood in June 1963. Under the production of Hazlewood, the legendary Jack Nitzsche provided the arrangement for the dance tune on which L.A.’s Wrecking Crew played to perfection. Ramona King continued to record with Warner Bros. where she released four excellent singles between 1964 and 1965 and then had a one disc deal with Amy Records in 1967. Miss King would have three more singles on three independent labels with the last surfacing in 1975. Ramona King went on to be a colorful storyteller and stage actress.

In the early 1960’s Betty began singing at various clubs in Santa Ana, California and throughout Orange County. In 1962, she recorded a duet with Ray Lockhart as Betty & Ray on Rendezvous Records entitled’You’re Too Much’ and followed it up with a solo single entitled,’Take Your Heart’ also in 1962 and also two singles with the label as the lead vocalist of a studio group of singesr credited as the INSTANTS. She occasionally sang with Santa Ana, neighbor, Bill Medley (who eventually became the lower voice of The Righteous Brothers) at various local clubs. While The Righteous Brothers were signed to Moonglow records, Betty and Bill Medley recorded a duet with one of Bill’s songs entitled,’My Tears Will Go Away’ which was never released. Betty eventually hooked up with Wrecking Crew pianist, Leon Russell who would produce her next record on the Philles Records subsidiary, Phi-Dan. Betty remembered rehearsing two songs with Leon at his home before they were recorded in 1965 at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studio. The tunes were a song written by country & western artist, Buck Owens entitled’Act Naturally’ which would be issued as Betty’s debut Phi-Dan single release and the often recorded,’If I Had A Hammer’ which was planned as a follow-up but ultimately was never released as a single. Betty remembered arriving at the recording date and being in awe at seeing all of the musicians including a french horn. She couldn’t believe that The Blossoms were singing background for her and commented on how beautiful and bright Darlene Love’s smile was. Just as Spector was known to do, Leon included an uninspiring two minute jam session by’The Wrecking Crew’ on the B-side to’Act Naturally’ in order to discourage DJ’s from splitting the airtime away from the intended plug side. While’Act Naturally’ may have been a country & western song, Betty Willis tore it apart left, right, up and down and turned it into something much more exciting. Unfortunately for Betty, The Beatles had recorded a version as well and DJ’s were going to play anything by The Beatles before they played a record by some unknown singer by the name of Betty Willis.
Betty recorded one final single on the Mojo label in 1967 entitled,’Aint Gonna Do You No Good’ b/w’Gone With The Wind (Is My Love)’ which had been also recorded in 1966 by Rita & The Tiaras on Dore records. The A-side of the disc was written and produced by Jackie Avery & John Farris. Both original 45’s of Betty’s and Rita & The Tiaras versions of the tune have exchanged hands for handsome sums of cash on internet auction sites.
It has been written that Betty Willis was the voice of Rachel & the Revolvers on the rare Dot single produced by Brian Wilson which is NOT true. Betty Willis and Brian Wilson never crossed paths. It has also been claimed that Alonzo Willis of The Alley Cats and session singer and later a member of The Honey Cone, Carolyn Willis were related to Betty which are both also NOT true.
Betty Willis eventually left the music business and worked many years at the U.S. Postal Service in Santa Ana California as a mail clerk before retiring. She currently lives in southern California with her daughter and grandchild.

The Hucklebuck:
Paul “Hucklebuck” Williams (July 13, 1915 – September 14, 2002) was an American blues and rhythm and blues saxophonist and songwriter. In his Honkers and Shouters, Arnold Shaw credits Williams as one of the first to employ the honking tenor sax solo that became the hallmark of rhythm and blues and rock and roll in the 1950s and early 1960s. After performing with Clarence Dorsey and King Porter he formed his own band in 1947. He was best known for his 1949 hit, “The Hucklebuck”, a twelve-bar blues that also spawned a dance craze. The single went to number one on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart. He used the billing of Paul Williams and his Hucklebuckers thereafter. Charlie Parker had four years earlier used the same riff for his “Now’s the Time”.

Amazingly, between mid-1947 (3 years before Mitch Miller) and early 1954, Sinatra saw only one (1) of his records reach the top 10 of Billboard’s weekly best-selling singles charts. And it was this posted track…his vocal cover of the Paul Williams instrumental R&B hit “The Huckle-Buck,” also recorded successfully by Frank’s old bandleader boss Tommy Dorsey.

Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra – The Huckle-Buck(1949)
vocal: Charlie Shavers

With some melodic similarity to Charlie Parker’s “Now’s The Time” (1945), “The Huckle-Buck” became a #1 R&B instrumental recording for the Paul Williams band and spawned various cover versions. The most successful was this Sy Oliver-arranged Tommy Dorsey release with vocal by trumpeter Charlie Shavers. It reached #5 on the singles sales listings, followed in 2nd place by the (also posted) Frank Sinatra version.

With some melodic similarity to Charlie Parker’s “Now’s The Time” (1945) and virtually the same tune as Lucky Millinder’s release of “D’Natural Blues” (recorded only weeks after this Williams version), “The Huckle-Buck” became a #1 R&B instrumental recording for the Paul Williams band and spawned various cover versions, most successfully by the Tommy Dorsey band,

Inspired in-part by Charlie Parker’s 1945 recording of “Now’s The Time,” Millinder’s “D’ Natural Blues” was an earlier title given to what instead became popularly known as “The Huckle-Buck,” recorded most successfully by the bands of Paul Williams (R&B) and Tommy Dorsey (’pop’).
