〈明日に架ける橋〉の素晴らしさはが、そのゴスペル調にあり、それにはピアノ・ソロの伴奏が必要だということに反対するものは誰一人としていなかった。その時同じ部屋に居合わせ、以前ポールと仕事をしたこともある、アレンジャーのジミー・ハスケルが、アートのキーでコードを書いた。

物思いに沈んだパッセージと別れをうたったこれらの歌は、ポールの最もパワフルで印象的な曲、〈明日に架ける橋 Bridge Over Troubled Water〉で十分に展開された断念と平和というテーマをも示唆している。当初「ヒム」（賛美歌）という曲名だったこの歌の中で、ポールは再度、不和やトラブルといったイメージを連想させているが、今回は個人的な枠から抜け出し、より普遍的な感情をうたった名曲を作り上げた。彼のテーマは、無私の愛の治癒力で、曲のルーツは、少年時代に情熱を傾けていたブラック・ゴスペルにある。
何年もの間彼はゴスペルをみっちり研究し、特にクロード・ジェーター牧師とスワン・シルヴァーストーンズがうたった名曲、〈オー・メアリー・ドント・ユー・ウィープ・フォー・ミー〉に心を動かされていた。この曲のジェーターのレコーディングには、彼自身が装飾音としてつけ加えたラインが含まれている。
