This tribute to painter Vincent van Gogh was a track from Don’s “American Pie” LP, issued as the followup 45 to his chart-topping “American Pie” single. The “starry, starry night” lyric is in reference to van Gogh’s 1889 painting The Starry Night (see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Starry_Night ).

The Crystals – Brother Julius(1963)

Janie Grant – Peggy Got Engaged(1962/10)

Presented here is the A-side of the last of six singles that seventeen year old composer/vocalist, Janie Grant, would issue with Caprice Records between February 1961 and October 1962. Born in New Jersey in 1945 as Rose Marie Casilli, by the time she was sixteen, she was seen performing at a party by Gerry Granahan who brought her to Caprice Records where she chose her professional name, Janie Grant. Her fist disc out of the chute was also self composed entitled,’Triangle’ which peaked at 29 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Janie’s final single with Caprice,’Peggy Got Engaged’ b/w’Two Is Company And Three’s A Crowd’ was recorded at New York City’s Regent Sound Studios with producer, Gerry Granahan and arranger, Sammy Lowe. The plug side was typical teenage fare with an atmospheric backing track and although indeed quality girly pop, it did not chart. The label issued two final singles, one by “Big” Buddy Lucas and the other by the Angels and then shuttered it’s doors. Miss Grant traipsed over to United Artists Records post haste and between July 1963 and March 1965, she had four singles with the label, the final disc,’I Shouldn’t Care (If You’re Using Me)’ was a powerful, densely orchestrated example of lost-love musical drama. One disc with Parkway Records in April 1966 was her swan song to the music biz and quite a surprising dance double-sider with the A-side arranged as a drum thumping quazi-Spector performance and the flip, a big beat, Motown-esque affair.

Jimmy Rand – Peggy, Peggy(1961)

The Hollywood Flames – Peggy(1954)

Originally a 1940 Swedish popular song “Min soldat” (or “My Soldier”), the melody with these new English lyrics was recorded by all of the major U.S. record labels and became one of the first war-themed hits of 1942.

The Music Of David Seville – Cecilia(1957/09)

Does your mother know you’re out…….Ceceeeelia?? Seville toyed-around with this 1926 song hit which is best-remembered from Ronnie Kemper’s stylized vocal with the Dick Jurgens band in 1940

Dick Jurgens and his Orchestra – Cecilia(1940)
vocal: Ronnie Kemper

Does your mother know you’re out…….Ceceeeelia?? Ronnie Kemper’s best-remembered vocal with the Jurgens band is a somewhat over-the-top performance, perhaps partially inspired by the stylized delivery of ‘Whispering’ Jack Smith, who had initially helped popularize this tune back in 1926.

Jack Smith(The Whispering Baritone) – Cecilia(1926)
Whispering Jack Smith

recorded in NYC September 21, 1925
This was one side of the first commercially-issued recording by the piano-playing vocalist. The song was popularly revived in 1940 by Ronnie Kemper with the Dick Jurgens band.

Johnny Hamp’s Kentucky Serenaders – Cecilia(1925)
vocal: Charles Buckwalter, Frank Masterson, and Elwood Groff
Composer: Herman Ruby, Dave Dreyer

recorded in NYC August 13, 1925
The version by “Whispering” Jack Smith was allegedly the most popular in 1925, though it was Dick Jurgens’ 1940 recording featuring vocalist Ronnie Kemper that remains best-remembered by many

The Third Wave – Chloe
from the album “The Third Wave Arranged And Conducted By George Duke – Here And Now”(1970)

Tony Williams – Chloe(1962/10)

Spike Jones and his City Slickers – Chloe(1945)
vocal: Red(Swamphead)Ingle

Tracy-Brown’s Orchestra – Chloe(Song Of The Swamp)(1928)
vocal: Sam Coslow

recorded in Chicago March 20, 1928
Here’s one of the early versions of a song which (for some) may immediately bring to mind Spike Jones’ popular mutilation of 1945; and it was one of five issued tracks from the only documented session credited to the ‘Tracy-Brown’ band. Per Johnson-Shirley ADBORAF, the hyphenated group originated in Omaha and was co-led by Frank F. Tracy and J. Nelson Brown.

Paul Whiteman and His Concert Orchestra – Chloe(Song Of The Swamp(1928)
vocal: Austin Young

recorded in NYC February 27, 1928
This elaborate early version of the song was ripe with the parody opportunities that Spike Jones and Red Ingle gleefully utilized in Jones’ famous 1945 recording

The Gotham Troubadours – Chloe(Song Of The Swamp)(1928)
vocal: Irving Kaufman
Sam Lanin as “Gotham Troubadours”

recorded in NYC January 25, 1928.
Here’s one of the early versions of a song which (for some) will immediately bring to mind the memorable Spike Jones mayhem of 1945, though it was also recorded by the likes of Ellington, Dorsey, and Goodman. For the flip side “Sunshine,”
