Critically acclaimed actor Peter O’Toole, known for his role in the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia, has died, his agent confirmed to British press on Sunday. He was 81.
The eight-time Oscar nominee passed away on Saturday at a London hospital after suffering from a longtime illness, according to his agent Steve Kenis, the Guardian reports.
O’Toole announced his departure from the stage and silver screen last year.

Peter O’Toole, the wry, fun-loving star who played the dashing English adventurer and army officer T.E. Lawrence in the 1962 epic masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia for one of his eight best actor Oscar nominations without a win, has died, his agent told BBC News. He was 81.
The actor died Saturday at The Wellington Hospital in London after a long illness, his agent, Steve Kenis, said.
O’Toole announced in July 2012 that he was retiring from acting. “The heart for it has gone out of me: it won’t come back,” he said. He did, however, return with announced parts in Katherine of Alexandria and Mary, two films yet to be released.

６２年の同作品をはじめ、「ベケット」（６４年）、「冬のライオン」（６８年）、「チップス先生さようなら」（６９年）などの作品でアカデミー賞の主演男優賞にノミネート。７０年代にはアルコール依存症でしばらく舞台から遠ざかっていたが、「スタントマン」（８０年）で復帰し、「ヴィーナス」（２００６年）に至るまで計８回、主演男優賞にノミネートされながら、すべて受賞を逃した。
０３年のアカデミー賞では名誉賞を贈られ、「その素晴らしい才能で、映画史上最も記憶に残る登場人物の数々を演じた」とたたえられた。

例えば「ギャンブルでいくら勝った」とか彼らはいいますが、ギャンブルは胴元が圧倒的に勝つことがシステム的な前提で、ほんの一部の者が大衆の欲望を駆り立てるインセンティブの役目を担って特例的に過大な報酬を得ることになっておりますから、勝負でも何でもないわけです。ゲームだってそれを作った側がシステムだけでなくルールまでも作っている以上、対等であろうはずがない。

「ワイルドライフ・リザーブズ・シンガポール（WRS）」が運営する「リバー・サファリ」（80 Mandai Lake Road）は12月7日、ボートに乗りアマゾン川の探検体験ができるアトラクション「The Amazon River Quest」を始めた。

“（Up A） Lazy River” had been recorded by its co-writer Hoagy Carmichael and by Louis Armstrong during the early 1930s; new 1941 releases by The Mills Brothers, Benny Goodman and Tommy Tucker increased its mainstream familiarity; and subsequent successes by Roberta Sherwood （1956）, Bobby Darin （1961）, and Si Zentner （1961） furthered the song’s status as a popular standard.

アメリカの五大湖は今、アジアン・カープ（コイ科の魚で中国から来た外来種）とか藻類とかが異常繁殖して困ってるんですが、さらに小さなプラスチックのビーズにも汚染されつつあります。石けんに入ってるビーズって、あのおしゃれな小物・雑貨売場にあるファンシーな石けんに飾りで入ってるやつ？と思いきや、もっと普通のボディソープとか歯磨き粉、あとスクラブ洗顔剤とかに含まれてるごく細かい粒状のビーズのこと。どれくらい細かいかって、ジョンソン＆ジョンソンのClean＆Clearってブランドのスクラブ洗顔剤だと、1本に33万個のビーズが入ってるらしいです。アメリカ人が購入する石けん類に含まれるビーズの量は、年間57万3000ポンド（約260t）に及んでいます。
最近の研究によると、こうしたマイクロビーズは家庭の排水口から流れていって海にたまり、五大湖にも流れ出ていくそうです。五大湖の魚は、マイクロビーズを餌と間違って食べてしまいます。プラスチックを食べるってだけならそこまで問題ないんですが、プラスチックビーズはポリ塩化ビフェニルとか殺虫剤といった毒性成分も吸収しています。Atlanticに掲載されたゴカイに関する調査では、小さなプラスチックの欠片がそれを食べる生物の毒物摂取源になっていることを示唆しています。つまり人間をきれいにするためのスクラブが毒薬に変わって、魚がそれを食べているんです。
そして困ったことに、そのビーズを除去する方法が今のところありません。というのは、スクラブは非常に小さいので、仮に水をフィルターにかけて除去するとしたら、湖の生物の食料となるプランクトンも一緒に濾し取ってしまいます。さらに下水処理システムにも、これらのビーズを捉える仕組みはありません。プラスチックビーズは非常に小さく軽いので水に浮きますが、下水処理システムは基本的に水に沈む重い物質を除去するべく設計されているからです。
スクラブのビーズってプラスティックなのか！
そんなもん食ってちゃビョーキにならないほうがおかしいね。
