This obscure disc shines a light on an interesting look at the early 1970’s L.A. music scene. The Era Record company had been in business in Los Angles since 1955 and throughout the 1960’s, the label issued a fascinating collection of singles over various musical genres. The label also distributed quite a few other local labels with the vast majority of those records having been recorded in Los Angeles with many again having been recorded at Gold Star Studios. Such is the case with this disc from June 1970, near the end of the Era Records operation. Herb Newman, owner of the company had a 22 year old singer/songwriter under contract by the name of Gerald Rea. The young vocalist worked at an L.A. mortuary by day and had then schlepped over to Gold Star to record with engineer, Stan Ross various jingles and other projects by Newman for the label. Out of the many reels of recording tape, Gerald managed to have at least three singles released with Era credited as Jerry Ray. The first outing being this wonderfully soulful ballad composed and produced by Herb Newman with a stellar arrangement by Dick Parker. An ensemble of L.A.’s Wrecking Crew laid down the backing track with the Ron Hicklin Singers providing background vocals. Jerry’s vocal delivery on’Lonely Mansion’ was quite impressive and powerful for a young man of just 22 years old. His style and sound was very similar to that of David Clayton-Thomas, least vocalist of the group, Blood, Sweat & Tears. Sadly and most unfortunately, this recording as did Jerry’s two other discs, were never even noticed. There is a happy ending to the story, however. Nearly fifty years later, K-Tel, which now owns the Era Records Catalog, has released 36 of Jerry’s recordings of which 11 are finally available and can be heard for the very first time. Jerry, who is now a retired clinical lab scientist, enjoys time with his wife Wanda in the city of Carlsbad, California.
