Out of Los Angeles, , talk about an amazingly talented cast of characters, this wonderfully orchestrated production is the creation of the genius that is Stu Phillips. In 1964 while working at the west coast office of Colpix Records as the head of Artists & Repetoire, Phillips freelanced as an orchestrator/producer/arranger at Capitol records. His first project was a session with the Four Preps on a tune entitled,’A Letter To The Beatles’. That tune was his inspiration to create an albums worth of instrumental Beatles tunes arranged with a new modern sound. Credited to the’Hollyridge Strings’, the concept was a huge success. By 1965, Phillips had left Colpix and recorded exclusively for Capitol. The popularity of the Hollyridge Strings Beatles collection eventually led to other LP’s that featured the hits of the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, the Four Seasons, Nat’King’ Cole and also a wonderful Christmas album. (Arrangers, Perry Botkin, Jr. as well as Jimmie Haskell also provided orchestral arrangements for supsequent Hollyridge Strings LP’s.)
Recorded in the spring of 1965 and issued in July, the’Feels Like Lovin’ LP showcased the Hollyridge Strings with beautiful vocals by the Ron Hicklin Singers. Although not a big seller, Stu Phillips has said that it was his favorite album while at Capitol.

The majority of the popular Les Paul & Mary Ford vocal hits were new treatments of older songs. This one had been recorded successfully by several artists in the year 1922, but of course none of them sounded remotely like this! With help from the instrumental flip “Whispering,” “The World is Waiting For The Sunrise” reached the million mark in sales and peaked at #3 on both the juke box and best-seller Billboard singles charts. Also in this 1951 collection are the Les & Mary hits “How High The Moon” “Mockin’ Bird Hill” “Just One More Chance” and “Tennessee Waltz.”

Duke Ellington And His Orchestra – I Like The Sunrise
from the album “Duke Ellington’s Liberian Suite”(1949)
recorded in New York City, 24 December, 1947
(Instrumental)

Duke Ellington And His Orchestra recorded the Liberian Suite for Columbia on 24 December, 1947 in New York City (not 24 April as one submission has it) with a 19-piece band, and vocals by Al Hibbler overdubbed on “I Like The Sunrise.” The work was commissioned to Ellington by the Liberian government upon the centennial celebration in 1947. The suite consists of an introduction and five dances, meant to “represent the spirit motivating the foundation of the republic” (liner notes). Released as a 10″ LP in 1949 (CL 6073), it was reissued in 1956 on 12″ (CL 848) together with a new work, the 14-minute “A Tone Parallel To Harlem” – more familiarly known as “The Harlem Suite” or just “Harlem” – occupying the entire B side, and recorded in New York, 7 December 1951. The Liberian Suite was reissued in Europe on CD in the 80s, but is more easily available now, together with The Harlem Suite, on the 2004 compilation CD Duke Ellington And His Orchestra – Ellington Uptown.
