「ギョエテとは俺のことかとゲーテ言い」という川柳を詠んだのは斎藤緑雨と言われています。当時、ゲーテ（Goethe）の日本語表記は、この他、「ゲョエテ」「ギョーツ」「グーテ」「ゲエテ」など数十種類にものぼったそうです。

同じ名前が国によって違う呼び方をされているのは、ゲーテだけではない。英米ではロスチャイルドである大財閥も、ドイツではロートシルトであり、フランスではロチルドだ。もっと身近な例で言えばジャイカ（JICA）も、国によってジカになったり、ヒカになったりする。

主要国の大使を勤めたある外交官から自作のエッセイ集を頂いたことがある。実に面白い内容だったのだが、「テレヴィ（テレビ）」、「スダン（スーダン）」、「ボウト（ボート）」など見慣れない表記が頻繁に出てくるので、面白さがいくぶん削がれる思いがした。
明治初期、綴りではなく音から表記したラムネ（レモネード）、メリケン（アメリカン）などの表記の方がよほど外国人には理解し易いことも考えさせられる。チュニジア大使などを務めた外務省の多賀敏行氏が著書「国際人の英語」（丸善ライブラリー）の中で、「ロンドンのタクシーに乗って『ウェスト・ケンジントン』に行きたければ、『上杉謙信』と言え」と書いているのも頷ける。

In September 1966 at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood, an album’s worth of material was recorded by Puerto Rican born, TONY DARYLL. A singer, dancer, actor and knowledge of several languages, he began his show biz career playing small parts in Broadway shows which led to a series of one-nighter shows in the Catskill mountains of New York. Polishing and perfecting his night club act led him to Miami Beach where when on a vacation to Las Vegas in 1965, he was discovered by Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows. A smooth vocal style with a wide range, Tony Daryll seemed to have appeared and disappeared without a trace. Other than a one single and LP deal with Dot Records, no other information regarding what he did following it can be found.

アメリカ旅行をして、英語だと思って使ったカタカナが全然通じなかったという経験をしたことはないだろうか。例え固有名詞だとしても、英語の発音ルールに基づくと違う発音になる言葉がある。例えばカメラの「ニコン」は「ナイコン」、スーパーの「コストコ」は「コスコ」、チョコレートの「コディバ」が「ゴダイヴァ」重さの「ポンド」が「パウンド」、バイクの「ハーレーダビッドソン」が「ハーリーデイヴィッドソン」等。この度アメリカで、家具の「イケア」をアメリカ進出以来ずっと間違えて発音していたことが指摘され、話題に！

アメリカに進出してから実に３０年間もの間、ずっと社名を「アイキア」と発音してきた。これが実際の会社名「イケア」とは全然違う呼び方だと指摘されたのだ。

綴りが同じなのに各国語で発音が違う例は「多い」というより「当たり前」なのだ。

Venus は英語でヴィーナス、ドイツ語でヴェーヌス、フランス語でヴェニュス、スペイン語でベーヌス、ラテン語ではウェヌス。
イタリア語では Venere と書きヴェーネレ、ロシア語では Венера ヴィニエーラ。
ギリシャ語では Αφροδίτη で、ご存知のとおりアプロディーテーと同定される神である。

Once the Jack Teter recording of this old tune began moving up the charts, all of the major labels released their own competing versions. But Decca issued TWO similar recordings–both by the Russ Morgan orchestra. There was the reissued all-instrumental arrangement from a decade earlier as well as this new recording that was much the same but also included a brief vocal chorus by Russ & the Morganaires. Whether deliberately or by accident, Billboard’s published 1949-50 weekly singles charts listed the record number of only the instrumental reissue version, however this newer vocal track has generally been the one to show up on Russ Morgan compilations.

Here’s one of the more popular “new” versions of the old “Johnson Rag,” revived due to the （also-posted） Jack Teter recording. As popularity of the grand old big bands continued to fade, Dorsey kept at it…releasing on Columbia a number of sides with a Dixieland feel to them.

The name may also be spelled Pavone, Pavon. Depending on what nation of origin it comes from. I receive compliments on my name all the time. It is very lyrical and have enjoyed having this name.

Pavanne is my name and while it was a hard name to grow up with due to problems with pronunciation..probably would have been different if spelled as Pavan or Pavon（e）. But, I enjoy it now. It has alot of meaning and the piece of music I am named after is one of my favorites.

Morton Gould’s popular light orchestral work gets an early treatment from Fiedler and the boys, released as the flipside of “The Toy Trumpet.” The composer also recorded his own more leisurely paced version in the early 1940s （previously posted）, though it’s the swinging 1939 Glenn Miller track that probably remains the most familiar.
