Harry James and his Orchestra with Doris Day – Would I Love You(Love You, Love You)(1951/01/29)
vocal: Doris Day

Patti Page had the dominant version of this early-1951 hit, but Doris & Harry also reached top-20 on the best-sellers chart with this fine version….one of several sides that they cut for Columbia, having worked together on the 1950 film “Young Man With A Horn.” See also Doris’ 1951 hit “(Why Did I Tell You I Was Going To) Shanghai.”

Patti Page – Would I Love You(Love You, Love You)(1951/01)
orchestra conducted by Harry Geller

Her huge “Tennessee Waltz” was still seated comfortably in the number-one best-seller position when Patti’s very popular follow-up release “Would I Love You” entered the national top-10 in February. But not only did the two hits share eight weeks in that hallowed ranking, there was also a third Patti Page record in there for four of those weeks….”Mockin’ Bird Hill.” 1951 was a very good year for “The Singin’ Rage.” See also the Doris Day-Harry James version of “Would I Love You.”
Note that in at least one major-label CD compilation of Patti’s hits a rejected take with a badly muddled ending was substituted for the correct single release. This post is of the original hit version.

Al Martino had the most mainstream success with this song in 1963; Elvis famously included it among the 12 tracks in his first LP back in’56; but it had first exploded as a 1950 chart-topping country single performed by its composer Leon Payne. None of the pop cover versions of the time managed to get off the ground, but this Sammy Kaye release is a pretty one, with an arrangement similar to the band’s “Harbor Lights” hit of several months earlier.

About a year before he would bring us his most famous recording of “Night Train,” veteran big band trombonist Morrow enjoyed his first national record success as leader of his own band with this march-tempo cover version of the Frankie Laine hit, reaching #8 on the nation’s radio airplay chart.

The composer of the much-recorded country-pop standard gave us this first version and reached #1 on Billboard’s C&W radio airplay chart in early 1950 (his only national chart appearance). Versions by Ernest Tubb and Clyde Moody also shared in the tune’s initial success that year. Some of us first heard the song in 1956 when Elvis included it in his first LP, and a top-5 version in 1963 revived the career of Al Martino

This #1 “Hit Parade” tune came from Cole Porter’s stage musical “Mexican Hayride.”
Due to the 1942-44 strike against the record industry (aka “The Recording Ban”) by the American Federation of Musicians, no musical instruments could be utilized in the production of new commercial recordings by those companies which had not yet settled with the union, which included Victor at the time of this recording. Thus, only a vocal group is heard accompanying Perry.
