Harry James and his Orchestra – I Can’t Begin To Tell You(1946)
vocal: Ruth Haag (Betty Grable)

Though Betty Grable was one of Hollywood’s top stars at the time and had a perfectly respectable singing voice, there were no “Betty Grable” records to buy, as she had no recording contract. However, label-billed as “Ruth Haag,” she did make this one appearance on the national top-10 record charts as vocalist with her bandleader-husband Harry James. “I Can’t Begin To Tell You” was the ballad hit from Grable’s movie musical “The Dolly Sisters” and was also recorded successfully by Bing Crosby and Andy Russell.

Crooner Russell reached #8 on the best-sellers with this recording of the tune from “The Dolly Sisters” (see also the Bing Crosby and Harry James-Betty Grable versions). Other Andy Russell hits in the 1946 collection include “Pretending” and “Laughing On The Outside (Crying On The Inside)”

The big ballad hit from Betty Grable’s film “The Dolly Sisters” gave Bing yet another #1 best-seller. Betty also recorded the tune, though under an assumed name, with her husband Harry James. That and Andy Russell’s version are included in the 1946 collection.

Ink Spots – That’s When Your Heartaches Begin(1940)

以下、「Begin」「Beginning」「Prelude」「We’ve Only Just Begun」を含む投稿。

Andy’s sixth and final U.S. Top 10 single was included in his last studio LP “After Dark.” The instrumental backing had been recorded in 1978 for a proposed Bee Gees LP track which was not released; and this later vocal session resulted in one of only two released songs to feature all four Gibb brothers (the other, Andy’s “Arrow Through The Heart,” would be issued posthumously in 2010).

Woody Herman – That’s My Desire(1947)
accompanied by The Four Chips

recorded March 19, 1947
Thanks to Frankie Laine’s terrific career breakthrough version, this 1931 ballad emerged to become a semi-standard (and later on, a favorite of doo-wop groups). Woody’s low-key treatment shared 1947 national record chart appearances with Laine, Sammy Kaye, Ella Fitzgerald, Martha Tilton, and Hadda Brooks.

Martha Tilton – That’s My Desire(1947)
with vocal group and Dean Elliott and his Orchestra

Barely noticed upon its initial early-1930s introduction, the ballad finally caught on in 1947, thanks to Frankie Laine’s breakthrough performance on the young Mercury Records label. Popular versions by Laine, Tilton and Sammy Kaye are included in this 1947 collection.

Don Cornell and The Kaydets

This version of the early-thirties ballad, released several weeks after Frankie Laine’s famous recording, rose to #2 on Billboard’s juke box rankings. The two discs spent about five months each on the national charts. See also the 1947 Kaye hits “An Apple Blossom Wedding” “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” and “Red Silk Stockings And Green Perfume.”

Frankie Laine and Mannie Klein’s All Stars – That’s My Desire(1947 his original hit version)

After performing in semi-obscurity for well over a decade, stylish jazz & blues vocalist Laine struck gold and gained national fame in 1947 with the release of this early-thirties ballad. And he was still singing it at his final live performance in 2005. See also Sammy Kaye’s and Martha Tilton’s versions in the 1947 collection.

vocal: Maurice Elwin

recorded (London) November 20, 1931
Frankie Laine never performed it like this! A progressively peppy arrangement from British bandleader John Firman, who, along with brother Bert Firman, recorded hundreds of sides between 1924 and 1937, issued under some 20 different pseudonyms.

conducted by Victor Young

recorded in NYC June 30, 1931
Victor Young conducted the Brunswick Orchestra on this pretty arrangement of the 1931 song… best-remembered by many as the tune that shot Frankie Laine to stardom nearly 16 years later.
