Al Trace and His New Orchestra – You Call Everybody Darlin’(1948)
vocal: Bob Vincent(1948)

The commercial high point in the decades-long professional career of Chicago-area musician-bandleader-songwriter Al Trace was this major record hit of 1948…six weeks atop the national jukebox charts for the Regent disc (he had previously recorded the song for the Sterling label). Additional versions by Jack Smith, Anne Vincent and The Andrews Sisters enjoyed some success and are included in this collection.

orchestra conducted by Billy Ternent

Bypassing the domestic 1948 ‘recording ban’ restrictions by using orchestral tracks recorded in England by British bandleader Billy Ternent, Decca and the Andrews Sisters were able to manufacture “normal-sounding” cover versions on both sides of this “You Call Everybody Darling/Underneath The Arches” 78 release. Trailing the Al Trace original, this Sisters recording peaked at #8 on the Billboard jukebox chart. Also posted to this collection are the Andrews tracks “Toolie Oolie Doolie” “I Hate To Lose You” and “Woody Woodpecker” (with Danny Kaye).

Jack Smith and The Clark Sisters – You Call Everybody Darling(1948)
2度目の引用。

A 1948 ‘recording ban’ hit, using only ‘union-approved’ musical instruments.* Popular radio vocalist and future TV game show host Smith is backed by The Clark Sisters and some harmonica accompaniment on this top-15 entry. See also the Al Trace, Andrews Sisters and Anne Vincent versions.
* During the nearly year-long strike by James C. Petrillo’s American Federation of Musicians, new vocal recordings for commercial release could be produced only as a cappella (all vocal…no instruments) or using such lesser, ‘union-approved’ tools as harmonicas, ukuleles and toy xylophones.

Jack Lathrop and The Drugstore Cowboys – You Call Everybody Darling(1948)

Former guitarist and occasional vocalist with the Glenn Miller band, Lathrop gave us RCA’s “recording ban” entry in the cover wars battle over Al Trace’s #1 hit. Unlike the 1942-44 recording strike by the American Federation Of Musicians, during which no musical instruments (other than the human voice) were to be utilized to accompany vocal recordings, the 1948 recording ban did loosen things up a bit by allowing in the recording studio such unsophisticated tools as ukuleles and harmonicas….both in evidence here.

Doris Day and Buddy Clark – Love Somebody(1948)
orchestra conducted by George Siravo

With veteran studio and radio vocalist Buddy Clark finally achieving mainstream stardom with his 1947 hits of “Linda” and “Peg O’ My Heart,” Columbia decided to record him with label-mate Doris Day. She had recently embarked on her solo career and this #1 radio airplay duet of “Love Somebody” was her first popular single since leaving the Les Brown band (though her “It’s Magic” hit and star-making turn in “Romance On The High Seas” followed “Love Somebody” by mere weeks). Flipside “Confess” is also included in this collection.

Though bandleader Russ Morgan co-wrote this standard and released the most popular 1940s version, Nat King Cole and his trio were first to record it. However, the track remained unissued until 1966 when it appeared on the Capitol album “The Vintage Years.” In the mid-1960s a version by Dean Martin reached #25 on Billboard’s Hot 100

Russ Morgan and his Orchestra – You’re Nobody’Til Somebody Loves You(1946)
vocal: Russ Morgan

Recorded in the autumn of 1945 and only a moderately successful top-20 single in early 1946, who knew that the tune was destined to become a standard? Bandleader Morgan co-wrote it and sings it here (minus the added cavernous reverb found on most reissues of this track).
