Billy Murray and Ada Jones – I Wish I Was in Dixie’s Land(1916)

Carl Smith – Ten Thousand Drums(1959/06/08)
One of Columbia Records’ most consistent country music hitmakers during the 1950s, Smith never found that elusive mainstream (or ‘pop’) recording success. This march-tempo historical tale (co-written with Mel Tillis) was plainly an attempt to appeal to the same millions of people who embraced country star Johnny Horton’s recent crossover smash “The Battle Of New Orleans.”

This was the song (co-written with Irving Caesar) that first brought George Gershwin to fame in 1920, thanks in great part to Al Jolson who featured it in his Broadway show “Sinbad” and also sold a ton of 78s for the Columbia label. Quite different from that comparatively tame 1920 recording, this energized mid-40s version was among the new Jolson remakes that returned him to the best-sellers listings and to a revitalized career on radio.
Jolson performed “Swanee” in the 1945 Gershwin biopic “Rhapsody In Blue” and provided the recording for Larry Parks’ lip-synching in the the popular 1946 film “The Jolson Story.”

This recording was issued as one of eight in Victor’s last of four early-1940s album sets that featured cast members of NBC’s weekly program “The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street.” The tongue-in-cheek presentations of jazz, blues and Dixieland were performed by studio musicians led by Henry Levine and Paul Laval with vocals during the early seasons by Dinah Shore, Lena Horne and Linda Keene. Wikipedia’s entry “The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street” has additional details about the program.
