Otis Leavill – Because Of You(1965)

Gloria DeHaven and Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians – Because Of You(1951)

Best known for her movie roles and later television work, singer-actress DeHaven made this rare appearance on the record charts with her Lombardo band vocal on the big 1951 ballad hit “Because Of You.” This version reached #11 on the Billboard juke box charts, trailing the (also-posted) versions by Tony Bennett and Les Baxter.

Sammy Davis, Jr. – Because Of You(Part 1 and Part 2)(1954/09)
orchestra conducted by Morty Stevens

Pop Chart Peaks: Music Vendor 38, Cash Box 45
A popular feature of his’live’ performances, this novel treatment of the Tony Bennett hit was recorded over two sides of a single release, featuring Sammy’s impressions of various vocalists on Part 1 and movie stars on Part 2.

Les Baxter – Because Of You(1951/08)
with chorus and orchestra

As Tony Bennett’s revival of this minor 1940 song hit shot up the charts, various cover versions rapidly appeared on the market with only the Les Baxter choral version reaching Billboard’s top-10. It was the first of several (top-billed) Baxter hit singles that Capitol would release over the next five years.

Tony Bennett – Because Of You(1951/04/30)
orchestra conducted by Percy Faith

At about the same time that moviegoers were hearing this fairly obscure pre-WW2 tune in the soundtrack of the 1951 film “I Was An American Spy,” young Tony Bennett (still looking for his first major hit) was in the Columbia Records studio with arranger-conductor Percy Faith and producer Mitch Miller creating this piece of musical history. “Because Of You” spent ten weeks atop the Billboard record charts and was (by some accounts) the most popular single of 1951. Tony immediately followed up with another #1 million-seller “Cold, Cold Heart” and the two-sided beauty “Blue Velvet / Solitaire,” all of which are included in this collection….as are the runner-up versions of “Because Of You” by Les Baxter and by Gloria DeHaven with Guy Lombardo.

Checker

R&B Chart Peaks: 1 (sales), 9 (juke box play) – Pop Chart Peaks: 20 (juke box), 25 (sales)
While Tony Bennett’s million-seller recording was still riding high, this instrumental version also entered the charts. Jazz alto saxophonist Smith had previously played with the Mills Blue Rhythm Band (1936-38), Count Basie (1940-42), and Lucky Millinder (1942-44).

The song’s murky history appears to begin as early as 1836 and the time of the Texas Revolution, taking it through various lyric changes over the decades. A favorite marching tune during the Civil War, “The Yellow Rose Of Texas” was recorded by Mitch Miller for his 1955 LP “The Confederacy” and was pulled for single release, resulting in the stirring million-seller that topped the charts for six weeks during Sep-Oct. One of Columbia Records’ most consistent country music hitmakers during the 1950s, Smith never found that elusive mainstream (or ‘pop’) recording success. This was the song (co-written with Irving Caesar) that first brought George Gershwin to fame in 1920, thanks in great part to Al Jolson who featured it in his Broadway show “Sinbad” and also sold a ton of 78s for the Columbia label. Quite different from that comparatively tame 1920 recording, this energized mid-40s version was among the new Jolson remakes that returned him to the best-sellers listings and to a revitalized career on radio.
Jolson performed “Swanee” in the 1945 Gershwin biopic “Rhapsody In Blue” and provided the recording for Larry Parks’ lip-synching in the the popular 1946 film “The Jolson Story.”
