Starting in 1953 with a two year stint at RCA Victor, Tommy Sands would have a two year dry spell before a lucrative musical career with Capitol Records from 1957 to 1961. There was a duet disc with Annette on Buena Vista in 1961 then a year and a half break followed by four singles with ABC Paramount in 1963 and 1964. In 1965, Tommy released two singles on Liberty and another two on its subsidiary label Imperial in 1966 and 1967 and finally, his swan song disc on the obscure Superscope label in 1969. With sixteen years of recorded material, Tommy’s Liberty recording of’The Statue’ is the most sought after and collectible. ‘Little Rosita’, a Van McCoy penned song was the flip side of that disc. At a session booked at Hollywood’s United Recording in late October 1965, Snuff Garrett and Leon Russell were the producers and Leon also did the arrangements for both tunes on which L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ delivered the musical goods. Tommy performed the percussive dance tune,’The Statue’ (which he and Al Capps composed) on TV music shows such as’Hollywood A Go Go’,’The Lloyd Thaxton Show’ and’Hullabaloo’ but the record appeared to have came and went unnoticed. The rumor at the time and going forward was that Frank Sinatra had Tommy Sands’blacklisted’ in the entertainment biz after his divorce from his daughter, Nancy in the summer of 1965. Both Tommy and Frank Sinatra denied that rumor.
According to the description of a YouTube video posted on October 8, 2021 by Sands’ daughter, Jessica Sands Hoffman, Tommy Sands is now living with her family and has dementia.

Recorded at Bradley’s Recording Studios in Nashville, this disc was the fourth of six Columbia singles issued in the United States by then 14 year old Canadian Songstress, Sandy Selsie (her last two singles were credited to’Sandy And The Sophomores’ and in her native Canada, one final Columbia disc was released in 1965 entitled,’That’s The Way It Happens’/’I Wish That I Could Fall In Love Today’). No expense was wasted in the quality of Miss Selsie’s recordings which featured Nashville’s cream of the crop musicians known as, the’A-Team’ and for this session, the Anita Kerr Singers on background vocals. Produced by Don Law and Frank Jones,’When Jimmy Comes Home’ is an absolute, top notch, slick slice of teen Girl Pop.

Dee & Di – Silly Billy(1961/09)

Issued in September 1961, the last of three known singles that Susanne and Diane Roshay recorded as Dee & Di. Graduates of Clairmont (California) High School class of 1960, their first single entitled,’Just You’ was recorded in Hollywood at Gold Star Studios with arranger, Hank Levine who provided a lovely arrangement that was sparse yet quite dreamy, showcasing Diane and Susanne’s harmonic lead voices. ‘Just You’ b/w’Dream’ were both composed by the girls as was the follow up Keen single released in February 1961,’(Then I’ll Say) Goodbye’ b/w’Lucky Girl’. While attending Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California, the final Dee & Di disc,’Silly Billy’ b/w’Roses Are Red’, was released in September 1961 on the Acclaim label. By the summer of 1965, Susanne, Diane and five young men had formed the folk/pop group, the Lively Set and recorded one single for Mercury Records. They moved to Capitol Records the following year and under the production of David Axelrod, in August released only one single as well. The final known Lively Set single was from October 1966 on the Straight Ahead label. After that, the doings and whereabouts of Susanne and Diane Roshay are not known other than their names are now Diane Roshay Finnegan and Susanne Roshay McClain.

If researching only the ‘record charts’ you might dismiss this recording act as having had no important role in the world of R&B or rock ‘n roll, but the duo of Don “Sugarcane” Harris and Dewey Terry are well-remembered as the writers and/or first recording artists for such songs as “Big Boy Pete” (The Olympics), “Farmer John” (The Premiers), “I’m Leaving It Up To You” (Dale and Grace), and “Justine” (The Righteous Brothers).

Andrews Sisters, assisted by Ray McKinley with Jimmy Dorsey and his Orchestra – Billy Boy(1938)
arranged by Vic Schoen

recorded November 21, 1938
It’s Jimmy Dorsey waving the baton (and taking a short clarinet solo) on this swinging update of the 19th century British folk song. Released as the flipside of the Sisters’ hit “Hold Tight–Hold Tight (Want Some Seafood Mama),” this was one of four tracks that they recorded with the Jimmy Dorsey band in 1938. Drummer/singer McKinley would depart Dorsey the following year to co-lead the new Will Bradley band.

Kathy Linden – Billy(1958/02)
orchestra conducted by Joe Leahy

Kathy’s singing style bore similarities to that of big band era vocalist’Wee’ Bonnie Baker, who had recorded this tune with the Orrin Tucker band in 1939 (the song itself actually dates all the way back to 1911).

Orrin Tucker and his Orchestra – Billy(1939)
vocal: Bonnie Baker

recorded in NYC April 2, 1939.
Followers of 1950s pop music may remember Kathy Linden’s top-10 version of this tune. Like Bonnie Baker’s signature number with the Tucker band, “Oh Johnny Oh Johnny Oh,” “Billy” was also a song that dated back to the teens which had first been popularized by the pioneer recording group The American Quartet.
