Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s Oscar-nominated pop standard was initially recorded as an instrumental by Stan Getz, was then a moderate success for Dusty Springfield （who also performed it for the “Casino Royale” soundtrack）, and finally in’68 achieved its top-selling recorded version by Mendes. Janis Hansen was featured on this track rather than the group’s usual lead vocalist Lani Hall.

In 1967 we became familiar with this new Bacharach-David ballad via Dusty Springfield, who was heard singing it in the movie “Casino Royale” and also released a popular single. Recorded eight weeks before Dusty’s was this lovely track issued on the LP “What The World Needs Now..Stan Getz plays Bacharach and David.”

Yes, that really is how the original 1965 45 release sounds…heavy-handed audio compression to the point of distortion. Co-writer Ellie Greenwich does the background vocals on this more highly-produced single version, which includes sleigh bells and hand claps not present on the different, slightly slower and more relaxed LP track.

Judy Wasenda – The Power Of Love（1964/11）

There is not a speck of information to be found regarding the creation of this one-shot teen release for Capitol Records by then seventeen-year-old, Brooklyn, New York born, Judy Wasenda. Composed by Jack Wolf and Maurice “Bugs” Bower,’The Power Of Love’ was backed with the 1939 American standard composed by Ruth Lowe and first made famous by Tommy Dorsey,’I’ll Never Smile Again’. Judy’s version of that B-side is not one of the better attempts made with the song. While her vocal performance is on point, it’s the arrangement with some corny background vocals that make it unbearable to listen all the way through. None the less, it is the plug side that Judy does shine and the whole track absolutely bursts out of the grooves at the drop of the needle. The drummer on the session should have received double scale as the fills and gusto that part played in the whole production really stands out.
Sadly, Miss Wasenda passed away at the young age of only 27 years old. As of 2025, Judy’s parents, her brother and her husband have all since passed away, but her sister,’Haley’ is still living and in 2016 stated just how proud of her sister she was and still is, “…..Judy Wasenda is my sister. I am so proud to have her as my sister. Through my whole life I have evaluated singers and so few have come close to her singing. Nobody has experienced her true talent as I have being so close to her. It is such a great loss not having her talent throughout the years due to her early passing. Ironically, her song “The Power Of Love” has brought estranged family members together. This makes “The Power Of Love” more meaningful.”
Hopefully in the not-so-distant future, more of the Judy Wasenda story will surface.
