Out of Los Angeles, this gargantuan’Wall Of Sound’ production recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios in June 1965 was shamefully kept in the can languishing away and not seeing release until nine years later. It would eventually be included as a cut on an LP of rare and unreleased Philles tracks in the’Phil Spector Wall Of Sound’ series of albums issued in the United Kingdom in 1976. It really is mind boggling to hear the mega talented Darlene Love wailing for all she’s worth over the echo saturated backing track flawlessly performed by an army of musicians filled to the rafters, then to have the whole thing be shelved. That travesty however, is no surprise to the fans of Phil Spector’s work. Known for his intense sense of perfectionism, quite a few of his magnificent productions were not released when originally recorded. Written by Carole King & Gerry Goffin,’A Long Way To Be Happy’ is by far one of Darlene Love’s finest recordings during her tenure at Philles and one has to wonder what her fortune might have been had this powerhouse track been issued as a single back in 1965.
‘A Long Way To Be Happy’ was also recorded and issued on Liberty in August 1966 by Carolyn Daye. It was produced by Calvin Carter and arranged by Gene Page but it pales in comparison to the Phil Spector produced version.

With an emphasis on jazzy-pop material as well as early country & western recordings, her claim to fame are the hits,’Wheel Of Fortune’ from 1952 and’Rock And Roll Waltz’ from 1955. Eventually to be issued in March 1965 as the third to the last single with Capitol, Kay Starr laid down the vocal to the Nick De Caro composition,’Happy’ at the Capitol Tower in Hollywood on December 12, 1964. Produced by David Axelrod with a marvelous arrangement by H.B. Barnum played by L.A’s’Wrecking Crew’, it really is one of the lost musical jewels of Kay’s lengthy career.
