Composed by bandmember Eddy Grant （of later “Electric Avenue” fame）, this track by the English group was recorded in 1966 and was first issued in the U.S. in 1967 on RCA Victor 47-9186. In 1968 it was reissued to great success.

Phil Gentry – Back Where You Belong（1967/04）

One of a handful of singles issued on the miniscule Sierra label out of Hollywood which is known to have been in operation from 1967 to at least 1969 . On some of the releases Tom Sawyer is given credit as producer and others have Sound House Recorders owner, Bob Summers credited as arranger and producer. It is a possibility that these two may have had some interest in the business side of the label as well. For this disc, the lead vocalist, Phil Gentry, also provided the arrangements for both sides. It is a curious production in that the A-side,’Back Where You Belong’, which was composed by Jimmy Breedlove in 1964 was given more interest internationally in 1966 by Pinky who recorded the song in the United Kingdom and two female vocalists in France who recorded their versions, Lucille （’Ces Bras Faits Pour Toi’） and Virginie （’Reviens Vite’）. All three are wonderful recordings. Phil Gentry may not have had a soulful vocal delivery but he did enunciate and correctly pronounce each and every word of the lyrics and with help from the struggling to stay on pitch female background singers, he gave it his best and pulled it off rather quite well. Phil’s arrangement did indeed have a soulful sound and could have really shined had it been beefed up just a bit. That track along with the flipside,’The Outside World’, more or less come across as what one would expect out of a basic demo recording. The original version of’The Outside World’ was recorded in February 1965 by Dobie Gray at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios. His version was fashioned in the style of his hit,’The In Crowd’ but for some reason, his version remained unissued. Dobie’s lead along with the musical elements of a tambourine and maracas were edited out and the track which for some reason also included the original backing vocals of the Extremes was passed over to the Drifters in New York where they recorded their vocals on top. The group issued the finished recording as the flipside to their 1965 Atlantic single,’Follow Me’.

The last single release by Jerry Fuller of about 20 that he would issue on the Challenge label from July 1959 until this one from April 1966. The A-side,’Double Life’ is a brassy Motown-esque dance-floor filler that has propelled original copies of the disc to command a handsome sum of cash by collectors. The B-side,’Turn To Me’ is a beautiful and soulful ballad with a somewhat Spectorian musical formula. Both of the tunes are Jerry Fuller compositions of which’Turn To Me’ he had produced a version with the Knickerbockers earlier in the year. That production was top notch and also had the Righteous Brothers/Phil Spector sound but for some odd reason, the powerful track was not issued when originally recorded but did finally see the light of day on a later Knickerbockers CD compilation on Collectible Records in 1998 that featured hits and rarities. Jerry Fuller wrote many wonderful songs and following his stint with Challenge Records, he went on as a composer/producer for Columbia Records. He scored big time with recordings by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap and produced stellar recordings with Johnny Mathis, Jack Bedient and the Chessmen, Mark Lindsay, O.C. Smith, Mac Davis, Gene Pitney, Andy Williams, Billy Joe Royal, Jimmy Walker and Al Wilson.
Jerry Fuller passed away in Sherman Oaks, California from lung cancer on July 18, 2024, at the age of 85.

THe Knickerbockers – Turn To Me（1966）

Unreleased when originally recorded in early 1966, this is the first version of the Jerry Fuller tune,’Turn To Me’ by the Knickerbockers featuring the lead vocal of Jimmy Walker. Formed on the east coast, they were noticed by Jerry Fuller, a singer, composer, producer from Los Angeles, who was there promoting his own recordings on Challenge Records. The group signed with Challenge where they would ultimately issue 12 singles and 3 LP’s with the label between November 1064 and April 1968. Under the production of Jerry Fuller, the group found themselves with a hit on their third single release from November 1965 entitled,’Lies’. It was an impressive nod to the British music that was saturating the US charts at the time, so much so that upon first listen many actually thought it was the Beatles. An album promoting that hit was assembled post haste where side one consisted of rock & roll tunes that complimented their hit. It was side two that was quite surprising. While side on had the group playing their own instruments on the tracks which were recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders, the B-side which was recorded a few blocks away at RCA Victor Recording Studios, was a collection of powerful,’Wall of Sound’ tracks arranged by Leon Russell showcasing the musical talents of 30 musicians. An ensemble of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ fortified with a group of string players. Jimmy Walker provided wonderfully soulful lead vocal performances on the tracks,’Wishful Thinking’,’You’ll Never Walk Alone’ and’Your Kind Of Lovin’. With the same personnel, at a later session,’Turn To Me’ was recorded, but for some reason, it never made it to vinyl. With enough’Blue Eyed Soul’ to rival what the Righteous Brothers were putting out at the time, it could have easily made an impact if released and promoted. Jerry Fuller recorded his own version at RCA a few weeks later in March 1966. It was issued but as the flip side to his Challenge single,’Double Life’. Neither side was a hit but the passing of time has put original copies into the desirable and collectible category.
When Jimmy left the Knickerbockers in 1967, he joined Bobby Hatfield, replacing Bill Medley and performed as the Righteous Brothers for four years. Challenge issued one Jimmy Walker solo single in 1968 and then it was at that time where he had two recording contracts. One with M~G~M/Verve for the Righteous Brothers and the other with Columbia for solo recordings of which only three singles were issued between December 1968 and June 1970. Jimmy continued to perform as a member of a band called Fatback following that with another group called Oasis. In 2009 her teamed up with several other musicians with his own band, continuing to perform and record. Jimmy Walker passed away in July 2020; no details are available regarding his passing or of any memorial service or burial.
