Produced by Eddie Davis, this classic’Brown-Eyed Soul’ recording feature the vocal talents of Arthur, David & Ruben Robles with instrumental accompaniment by the Romancers along with the Ralph Venturi Mariachi band. The disc would be reissued again in 1969 credited to DAVID & RUBEN on the Rampart label and shortly after that, the master was leased to Warner Bros. for national distribution. The disc was played locally but never broke out and made it to hit status. It wouldn’t be until over ten years after it’s initial release that interest in this flip side grew among the Northern Soul crowd. With an on-fire, mariachi intro, and percussive latin feel, the energetic’(I Love Her So Much) IT HURTS ME’ has become a highly coveted collectible. Several different bootleg pressings have also emerged due to the scarcity of original copies.

Lulu Porter – Nobody Hurt But Me(1965/07)

This June 1965 release is the second of the three singles Miss Porter (real name: Marianne Wolford) would issue on the Moonglow label and its subsidiary, Pep Records which at that time was distributed through Atlantic Records. While the record company may have had a nice run of singles by a diverse roster of artists, the RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS were actually the only act which made any real noise out of the tiny label’s operation. Curiously, promotional copies of this single by Lulu Porter were first pressed as Moonglow 243 and then as Pep 101, while stock copies were pressed only as Pep 101. The Moonglow number, 243, was then re-assigned to The Righteous Brothers 1965 release of’For Your Love’. Recorded at R.J. Recorders at 6357 Selma Avenue in Hollywood with the backing track supplied by an ensemble of L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’,’Nobody Hurt But Me’ is a big production number arranged by Ben Di Tosti with a fat, brassy arrangement complete with a French horn making it’s presence throughout. Although Lulu Porter had the exposure of lip-synching it on ABC-TV’s,’Shivaree’ in 1965, it would unfortunately go unnoticed and be thrown into that huge pile of fantastic, non hit obscurities.

Ginny Arnell – A Little Bit Of Love Can Hurt(1965/05)
Composer: Stallman, Weinstein, Randazzo
Producer, Arranger: Teddy Randazzo

Yet another flawless piece of explosive, mind-blowing Teddy Randazzo musical gold recorded on April 14, 1965 at New York City’s Bell Sound Studios. Twenty-two year old Ginny Arnell, sang effortlessly over Randazzo’s stunningly arranged backing track which sat nicely along side the work he was cranking out at the time with the Royalettes and Little Anthony & The Imperials. At the session, Miss Arnell recorded three tracks; presented here is the devastatingly dramatic,’A Little Bit of Love Can Hurt’, the eventual flip-side entitled,’B-I-L-L-Why’ and another lushly orchestrated number,’I’m Gettin’ Mad’ which was Ginny’s final M~G~M single as well as her swan song to the recording biz.
Ginny Arnell began her recording career at the age of sixteen issuing two singles on Decca as a duet with Gene Pitney credited as Jamie & Jane. She waxed three solo discs with the label as Ginny Arnell before a move to Warwick records and two single releases there in 1961 & 1962. Ginny auditioned for A&R man, Danny Davis which eventually landed her a recording contract with M~G~M records in 1963. For the next two years, Ginny Arnell enjoyed a life of performing, touring, television appearances along with releasing seven singles and an absolutely wonderful LP at M~G~M. While she worked with many top songwriters, producers and arrangers in New York as well as in Nashville, her Teddy Randazzo produced and arranged tracks are probably the finest vocal performances of her career.
