Marc Allen – Lonely（1963）
シングル “Wonder Why” のＢ面。

Talk about rare and unknown….. There are only two known single releases by male vocalist, Marc Allen. The first was issued in 1963,’Wonder Why’ b/w’Lonely’ was initially pressed on Sextant Records and apparently the only record with that tiny independent label. The second pressing was with Da-Mar Records and sadly, the label was actually circling the drain as Mr. Allen’s disc was the’swan song’ release. As expected, the pop double-sider was destined to be added to the land of seven-inch vinyl obscurities. Decades later, both pressings are highly sought after, especially the Da-Mar single that came with a picture sleeve. Featured here is the flip-side, an echo drenched, dreamy ballad on which Marc Allen delivers the finest in lounge lizardry, and that is not to say it is a bad thing. Marc gives a trained and powerful vocal delivery similar to that of Jack Jones. So, it along with the plug side are both quite endearing. Two years would pass before the last known recordings of Marc Allen were released. Moving on to a large label, in this case Mercury Records, proved to provide no added impact to Allen’s recording career. ‘Nobody Waved Goodbye’ b/w’Mirage’ tanked. The A-side was from the forgotten 1964 motion picture of the same name and B-side was from the 1965 star-studded movie entitled,’Mirage’. The movie soundtrack had a vocal group provide the vocals, Marc’s single was a single only version. Both sides were produced by Quincy Jones who also co-wrote the flip. That may have made an impact with the movie execs as Marc Allen was also hired for the 1965 Quincy Jones produced motion picture soundtrack of’The Pawn Broker’, once again singing the theme song and quite beautifully at that. Where Marc Allen went after that is unknown.

Wrecking Crew & Blossoms
Add this platter to the stack of recordings that feature the vocal talents of the Blossoms under a fictitious group name. The prominent voice joining the ensemble appears to be that of Gloria Jean Hargis who fronted the Victorians and Vik E. Lee on Liberty as well as a lone single on A&M as Gloria Melbourne. This Johnny Rivers production of the Charlie Rich tune,’Lonely Weekends’, gets a powerhouse treatment with L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ playing a brilliantly, percussive backing track enveloped in that magical, Gold Star Studios echo.

First released in 1963 by Ruby & The Romantics as the Top 30 hit “Hey There Lonely Boy”, this falsetto-voiced Holman treatment was his most popular hit.
Geek info: The somewhat ungracefully executed up-cut opening note is not carelessness on my part but the handiwork of whoever lopped off the opening few seconds of the original LP version in order to create this shorter 45 single edit.
