参加者：「夢は邪魔しようとする連中に脅かされている。俺たちの仕事も奪われている」「まだまだ（公平な社会は）遠い道のりです。だからここに今日集まっているんです。キング牧師の夢が実行されているか確かめないと」
１６日の記念式典では、初の黒人大統領となったオバマ大統領が演説する予定で、注目が集まっています。

記念碑の石像は高さ約９メートルで、牧師が岩山から浮き出るように彫られている。「私には夢がある」の訴えで有名な１９６３年のワシントン大行進の演説の「絶望の岩山から、希望の岩を切り出さん」という一節に着想を得た。
