The “Go” Sound Of The Kirby Stone Four – Ev’rything’s Coming Up Roses(1959)
orchestra and chorus conducted by Jimmy Carroll

Ethel Merman introduced this tune on the 1959 Broadway stage and later reprised it…sort of…in the classic 1980 film spoof “Airplane!” (as the shell-shocked Lt. Hurwitz). It’s from the Jule Style-Stephen Sondheim song score of “Gypsy” and this bright Kirby Stone track was the common radio airplay version, though it never managed to register on the national sales charts.

Eddy Arnold and his Tennessee Plowboys – Bouquet Of Roses(1948)

The Tennessee Plowboy’s monster country hit (a record-breaking 54(!) weeks charted–19 of them at #1) also spent an impressive six months on the pop listings, peaking at #13 on the juke box charts. Eddy’s original hit versions of “Anytime” and “Just A Little Lovin’ (Will Go A Long Way)” are also included in the 1948 collection, and previously posted to this channel is the a cappella Dick Haymes’recording ban’ version of “Bouquet Of Roses,” a minor hit for him in early 1949.

Dick Haymes with The Troubadours – Bouquet Of Roses(1948)

Recorded September 13, 1948.
A 1948’recording ban’ hit, performed a cappella (no musical instruments).* “Bouquet Of Roses” was an absolute monster of a hit for Eddy Arnold: 54 weeks on the country charts (19 weeks at #1) and half a year on the pop charts as well. This Dick Haymes version showed some minor juke box appeal in early 1949.
* During the nearly year-long strike by James C. Petrillo’s American Federation of Musicians, new vocal recordings for commercial release could be produced only as a cappella (all vocal…no instruments) or using such lesser,’union-approved’ tools as harmonicas, ukuleles and toy xylophones.
