Cole Porter standard from the musical “Wake Up And Dream.” Marketed by Sears, Roebuck & Co., Supertone label releases were pressed from Gennett masters between 1928 and 1930. For the flip side “You Do Something To Me,”
Carl Fenton (real name Walter “Gus” Haenschen) served as music director for Brunswick Records between 1919 and 1927, and the “Carl Fenton” orchestra billing appeared on many of the label’s releases over the years, whether or not Haenschen actually took part in the session. Violinist Ruby Greenberg led the orchestra in public appearances and purchased rights to the Fenton name in 1927, continuing to issue recordings under the “Carl Fenton” banner into the 1930s

The Pied Pipers – What Is This Thing Called Love?(1939)
session directed by Charles Margulis

recorded in NYC June 6, 1939
Cole Porter’s early-thirties hit and the also-posted flipside “In A Little Spanish Town” were among four tracks turned out in the Pipers’ recording debut for Victor in June 1939. Earlier that year the eight-voice group had been dropped by Tommy Dorsey after only six or seven weeks performing on his Raleigh-Kool Cigarette program (the sponsor didn’t like their style), but the bandleader would rehire them as a quartet several months later.
The original Pied Pipers, formed in Hollywood early in 1938 during the filming of “Alexander’s Ragtime Band,” consisted of Jo Stafford (recently of The Stafford Sisters trio) plus the former male vocal groups The Four Esquires and The Three Rhythm Kings: Chuck Lowry, Dick Whittinghill, John Huddleston, Woody Newbury, Hal Hopper, George Tait & Bud Hervey.

Charlotte O’Hara – Love Is A Strange Animal(Unissued, 1963)

(Unissued Gold Star Recording Studios 8 inch acetate disc) In October 2020, Jana O’Hara discovered among her mothers belongings, this 8-inch Gold Star Studios acetate featuring the vocals of her mother, Charlotte O’Hara. A fixture at the studio in the early 1960’s, Charlotte not only offered her vocal services for demo recordings and session work along with solo and group recordings she was also an accomplished composer. In 1963 under the direction of Al Hazan, she had her first solo single on the Ava label and recorded several tracks with the producer as potential follow-up releases which never materialized and were shelved. This recording of,’Love Is A Strange Animal’, which was one of those tracks appears to be the only known version of the unknown composition. Even with the odd animal sound effects, this is not one of Charlotte’s more memorable recordings. She is most remembered for her work after her tenure with Al Hazan when in 1965, she along with Sherlie Matthews and Clydie King signed with Philles Records and became Bonnie & The Treasures. It was under the production of Jerry Riopelle and arranger, Nick De Caro that the trio would issue a disc on Phil Spector’s Philles Records subsidiary label, Phi-Dan, the magnificent’Wall of Sound’ track,’Home Of The Brave’. Another single entitled,’Close Your Eyes’ b/w’My Love Keeps Growin’ was issued on the Warner Bros. label and there are several known unissued recordings in the can that may hopefully be released one day in the not so distant future.

John Brown Trio – Love Is A Wonderful Thing(1964)

Patti Walsh – Love Is

The Orchids – Love Is What You Make It(1965)
The Shirellesの “Sha-La-La”(1964)を思わせる箇所がある。

Out of New York, this Girl Group dancer features an unusually simple arrangement by musical genius, Teddy Randazzo. Known for his lavishly orchestrated pop extravaganzas with the likes of the Royalettes and Little Anthony & The Imperials, here he created a toned-down, drum and bass filled dancefloor track at just under two and a half minutes. The Van McCoy composition is brimmming with intoxicating four part girly harmonies by the Orchids who would grace the Roulette label only once with this sole outing. The group waxed a few singles for Columbia and can be heard on the unreleased New York Philles track,’Please Be My Boyfirend’ which over the years had been mistakenly credited to the Crystals.

Dinah Lee – What Kind of Love is This(1965)

Lou’s first significant success as a solo artist (he had previously sung back-up on a couple of Sam Cooke hits).

Johnny Wyatt – This Thing Called Love(1966/08)

James Darren – Love Is Where You Find It(1966/09)

Recorded at Hollywood’s Western Recorders in August 1966, this explosive recording is the fifth of eleven singles that the hunky vocalist/actor, James Darren, would issue during his tenure with Warner Bros. Records. Produced by Dick Glasser and relegated as a flip side if you can believe it, Gene Page delivers his signature style of arrangement stuffed with brass and percussion. Indeed, a studio full of talent on this one with L.A.’s’Wrecking Crew’ providing the churning backing track with the Blossoms on background vocals, it along with the A-side,’(Let’s Not Worry About) Tomorrow, Tomorrow’, unfortunately slipped by without making a ripple within the waters of hit top 40 sounds. One of Mr. Darren’s highlights that sits proudly along side his other Warner Bros. recordings,’Where Did We Go Wrong’,’I Want To Be Lonely’,’Counting The Cracks’ and’Didn’t We’.

(Bobbi And Michi)The Sound Of Soul – Love Is Such A Funny Thing(1966/09)

Patti Walsh – Love Is(1966)

This percussive girl pop disc gets tossed into the stack of one-shot, unknown L.A. vocalists of the 1960’s. In this case, Patti Walsh…..if that really is her name. Recorded at Hollywood’s Gold Star Recording Studios, Wayne Shanklin (who composed the tune) and someone by the name of R. Gilbert produced the session which also included backing vocals by members of the Ron Hicklin Singers.’Love Is’, is a somewhat distant sister-in-law production to’The Big Hurt’ by Miss Toni Fisher (also written and produced by Wayne Shanklin and also recorded at Gold Star). The flip,’Rain’ is no throw-away B-side and is quite an atmospheric ballad. Issued on the tiny L.A. label, Virgo, on which this is the only known release, copies of this obscurity are few and far between but worth the search for those hypnotized by the magical and hypnotic sound of the legendary Gold Star echo chamber.
