きのう２１日は朝晩寒かったけど、昼間は日焼けしそうな陽気でした。
こういう寒暖の差のある日は特に疲れるようです。

朝晩の化粧水や乳液をかかさず、ひげやむだ毛の処理に余念がない――。そんな若い男性が今、じわじわ増えている。身だしなみを気にし、美と清潔感を求める、そんな男性たちは「清潔男子」「綺麗男（きれお）」などと呼ばれ、20代を中心に増殖中なのだそうだ。

The second of only three known singles issued between October 1965 and May 1966 by Karen Verros. All released on the Dot label, Karen’s first disc,’You Just Gotta Know My Mind’ is a raucous, guitar laden slab of girly rock and is a very highly coveted and collectable. While Miss Verros does possess a lovely voice, her final Dot single is unfortunately, a real yawner. The primo coupling is on Karen’s second single which features a cover of the 1964 Crystal tune,’Little Boy’ backed with a wonderful Randy Newman composition,’I Can’t Remember Ever Loving You’. Jack Nitzsche, the arranger on the Phil Spector produced original version, is back on duty for the Verros version. Recorded at Hollywood’s Sunset Sound Recorders, Nitzsche provided a marvelous’Wall of Sound’ arrangement complete with castanets, tambourine, an army of strumming guitars, swirling strings and drums a’plenty. The flip side could have actually been issued as an A-side as it really is that good. This Dot single is quite the value for the money and although desirable and on many’want lists’, this one is still obtainable for collectors.

Mary Saenz – My Kind Of Boy（Unreleased,1965/11）

（Unreleased when originally recorded in November 1965） Born in Tuscon, Arizona on October 19, 1941, by the time she was in her early twenties, Mary Saenz migrated to Hollywood with her boyfriend/manager, Tom Lane. Within a few months, she recorded a fine girl pop single for Era entitled’He Didn’t Even Say Hello’ issued in late October 1963. The following year Mary signed with Dot records for a short run of two singles. Tom had hooked up with songwriter, Buddy Wayne who would furnish Mary with the four sides she waxed with Dot. The first from March 1964,’I Waited’ backed with’Let Me Be Your Baby’ and the follow-up from June 1964, the finger-snappy,’I Have Something You Can’t Get’ backed with the dreamy,’My Three Friends’. At this point in time, Buddy Wayne brought Mary to the attention of songwriting/producing pal, Gary Paxton, who was hired to supervise her next single. Securing a recording contract with Fred Astaire’s Ava Records in late 1964 went nowhere as the company was circling the drain eventually filing for bankruptcy in early 1965. Mary’s single was ultimately issued on Tom Lane’s Big Ben label. The tunes were both Buddy Wayne compositions,’Would She Do That For You’ backed with’I Think It’s You’. Paxton took Wayne’s mediocre demo of’Would She Do That For You’ and transformed it into an on-fire, drum-laden, hip-shaking dance number with Mary’s girly lead vocals riding on top. A fantastic performance that although promoted in print and on television, the record failed to break nationally. A few months later in November of 1965, Miss Saenz worked with Paxton for one last session held at the Capitol Tower to record the tunes,’It’s Too Late Now’, and’My Kind Of Boy’ which is what is presented here. These two tracks would ultimately be the finest Mary would ever record but sadly were not released at the time. They did however finally see the light of day when they were included in a 2004 compact disc compilation of Gary Paxton productions entitled,’Boy Trouble: Garpax Girls’ from Ace Records. In 1966, Miss Saenz began performing as ROBERTA DARREN, primarily in Las Vegas and Reno showrooms and casino lounges. Along with her solo performances she would also share the stage with a quintet of talented male musicians known as LOS ELEGANTES.
Residing in Las Vegas for many years, Mary Saenz / Roberta Darren （Santa Cruz） passed away in 2023 with no obituary or burial details.

Out of New York, not a shred of information to be found pertaining to this wonderful 1964 East Coast obscurity or as to who Miss Randi Carol is or where she came from. The only tidbit to disclose, thanks to fellow music lover, Hans Hasse, is that the composer of both sides of this Randi Carol disc, Benny La Manna, also wrote’Changed Disposition’ for a single issued by The Party Favors on R.S.V.P. in 1965 and later he recorded for the De-Lite label himself as Benny Troy.
As with the A-side,’He’s a Wild One’, quite often throughout’He’s The Boy’, Randi seems to struggle with her pitch but for some strange reason, it just seems to work and makes her vocal performance all the more endearing riding above such a drum and bass saturated backing track with those marvelous girly background vocals. A fantastic, Spectorian, double-sided obscurity.

“…..Real facts are: Benny LaManna, my 1st cousin and who I Represent, aka as recording artist Benny Troy on De-Lite records wrote the two songs this girl Rochelle aka Randi Carol/Carrol recorded. Her dad believed she had a fantastic singing voice, wanting her to be in the music business. Benny was 14 yrs old when he wrote these songs. He wrote the lyrics but had nothing else to do with the song. Benny also wrote the two songs the Party Favors recorded. Changed Disposition and You’re Not The Marrying Kind on RSVP. The Party Favors which I am one half of the duo, （as Hans Hasse） posted on a Yahoo page （which I just today discovered） sang backup vocals for Randi Carol. Yes, thats true we sang on the “Original” record （in 1963） doing backup and harmonizing with Randi, during her leads. But, her dad wasn’t happy about it. Her dad didn’t like that we covered up Randi’s lead vocals which the producer had directed us to do. Benny and I came across this song today and see her dad must have re-recorded the song with new girls singing backup. Hence, a new label. Randi’s record I recorded backup vocals on was shelved by RSVP. Jerry Simon accepted Randi’s record as a package deal because he wanted only the Party Favors. We went in as a package. We were 13 yr old kids. Randi was around 17 or 18 yrs old when she recorded these two songs. She lived in Queens, NY. Very nice family. She put her heart into singing these songs for her father!! I posses the original copy of He’s The Boy and He’s A Wild One. I hope this clears up the matter with both the Party Favors and Randi Carol/Carrol/Rochelle.”

Out of New York, a delicious sample of some obscure local talent jumping into the Girl Group pool. Written by Tom DeCillis & Richard Leyton, the production is percussive mix of the drama of the Shangri-las and musical elements of the Phil Spector sound. The record may have went nowhere when originally released back in December 1965 but is the stuff that Girl Pop collector salivate over 50 years later.

（unreleased songwriters’ demo acetate） As no evidence of this recording or information about the song has ever seen the light of day until 2025, it is another sad reminder of the countless musical compositions and recordings that are still hidden, hoarded, discarded, destroyed and forever lost to time. Presumably recorded in 1964 while musically gifted singer/composer/musician Ellie Greenwich was in her prime, rolling in the success of pop music coming out of the Brill Building in New York City. Along with fellow composers, Tony Powers, Mark Barkan, Ben Raleigh, Phil Spector and her husband Jeff Barry, hits galore were created that have now become a permanent imprint on the story of American top 40 popular music. Known around the city as the’Demo Queen’, Ellie was in such demand to provide the voice for demonstration recordings of newly composed songs of which the end result could oftentimes be pressed and released on its own as the finished product. That’s how well Ellie knew her craft and the music industry knew it. ‘He’s Not That Kind Of Boy’ is a perfect case in point. On this recording, not only does Ellie sing the lead, but she also provides the harmonic backing voices, which she often did on the many other demo recordings she was hired for. On this recording, there is a high soprano backing voice that is in question as to whether or not that part is indeed Ellie or another background singer in the studio. Regardless, it is surprising to realize that this fine, typical teen musical project never made it to anyone, not even as an album filler track. Regardless, sixty years after being put to recording tape at Associated Recording Studios and then cut as a 78 r.p.m. acetate disc,’He’s Not That Kind Of Boy’ finally makes its debut to the ears of eagerly to listen, Girl Group/Girl Pop music aficionados.

Lynette West – Boy, Let Me Tell You One Thing（1963, Unreleased United Recording acetate）

The elusive Los Angeles vocalist, Lynette West who in the early summer of 1963 had a single issued on the tiny L.A. BEE’n DEE label before it was quickly picked up and issued nationally on Jamie Records. The coupling of tunes,’If She Doesn’t Want You’ b/w’This Is Where I Came In’ were both composed and produced by Dotty Wayne and Ben Weisman who incidentally, were the owners of the first pressing record label. Well, not a speck of information regarding Miss West and her small recorded output could be found other than Jack Nitzsche provided the uncredited arrangements for the tunes. Fast forward 55 years and a wonderful musical discovery regarding Lynette West surfaced in the form of a dusty, United Recording double sided acetate containing two previously unissued and unknown recordings. The songs,’Boy, Let Me Tell You One Thing’ （copyright date: November 14, 1963） and’To Be With Him’ （copyright date and original title: December 4, 1963 -‘On The Outside Looking In’） typewritten with the same composers/producers involved with her first recordings, Ben Weisman and Dotty Wayne. Both tracks are lovely period L.A. girl pop and it sounds as if Miss West provided her own harmonic background vocals in the mix.
Sadly, Lynette West passed away in 2015 and hopefully more of her musical past will come to light and help to complete the missing pieces to her brief recording career.

Joy Byers – The Boy I’ll Love（unreleased, 1963）

（Unreleased 10-inch single-sided Associated Recording Studios acetate disc） This 1963 demo recording of a song composed by Joy Byers is a head scratcher. Miss Byers was busy writing many songs from about 1960 and onward. This tune from 1963 is one that, unless it was published under a different title, cannot be located in the yearly volumes of the’Catalog of Copyright Entries’. Typical of what a tear-jerker country/pop tune would sound like, the demo was more than likely recorded in Nashville and the tape was sent to New York and a acetate disc was cut at Associated Recording Studios for the publishing company, Hill & Range. The song apparently was never recorded by an established recording artist and this demo recording by an unknown singer is all that survives of the song and its history. Later, marrying record producer, composer, arranger and vocalist, Bob Johnston, Joy Byers also wrote songs under the name, Joy Johnston. She is known for composing among many tunes,’What’s A Matter Baby （Is It Hurtin’ You） for Timi Yuro and for writing several songs recorded by Elvis Presley.

Out of Los Angeles, the follow up to’He’s A Rebel’, this Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil composition,’He’s Sure The Boy I Love’ credited to the Crystals actually had none of those group members in the mix. The on-fire lead vocals were that of Darlene Love with backing vocals by Fanita James, Gloria Jones and Bobby Sheen. This alternate version was held in the can in favor of a mix with double tracked lead vocals and the omission of the “Oh-h-h-oh’s” sung on the intro before the first verse.

From the late 1950’s to 1965, they were all over the place in the L.A. music scene. Along with their daughters and Rickie’s sisters, dozens of recordings featured their harmonic voices under a bucketload of created group names and solo singers. Case in point, this 1962 recording by Ms. Page credited to’Bridget’, was first issued on the Troy label credited to the GEORGETTES. It was reissuedas the b-side to a Beatles novelty tune entitled,’America 209-264-3766′ recorded and issued in October 1964 as Sparrow #125.

Based upon an old Irish air, this lovely track was one of six traditional pieces that Anderson arranged in 1947 for his “Irish Suite.” He recorded it in 1952 for release on the Decca album “Leroy Anderson Conducts His Irish Suite,” issued on 78, 45, and LP.

（Unreleased Associated Recording Studios acetate disc） This 1963 recording features the vocals of an unknown, yet familiar sounding girl group. The Song,’He’s My Boy’ is apparently unlisted in the’Catalog of Copyright Entries’ for 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1965. It may be under another an unknown title variation. Recorded in New York City at Associated Recording Studios, although a songwriter’s demo recording, it is a typical and convincing, well put together example of the girl group/girl pop style of the day and could have easily been put out as is. Any information on the singer（s） or song is most welcome.

Vernons Girls – He’s My Boy – （Samantha Jones） – Unreleased Associated Studios acetate （1963）

（Unreleased Associated Recording Studios acetate） This 1963 recording features the vocals of the British female trio, The Vernons Girls. The 1963 line-up was comprised of Maureen Kennedy, Frances Lee and Jean Owens who later recorded as Samantha Jones. Jean is the double-tracked lead vocalist on this recording. The Song,’He’s My Boy’ is unlisted in the’Catalog of Copyright Entries’ for 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1965 but may be under another an unknown title variation. While the acetate was cut in New York City at Associated Recording Studios, the record was never pressed and issued in the USA or in the UK. While the original session was held in England, the appearance on a New York City cut acetate is the big question. The Vernons Girls management may have decided on not releasing the tune and the composer（s） and music publishing company may have simply had the disc cut in New York as a demonstration disc in hopes of being picked up and recorded by a popular group/vocalist. Maybe the Vernons Girls cut the song exclusively for the composer（s） on the side for extra cash. The passing of over sixty years will probably never bring forth the true intention of this recording. Regardless, it is a typical and convincing, well put together example of the girl group/girl pop style of the day and could have easily been put out as is.
