Judie Lund – Hold Out Your Hand(1963/04)

This obscure, one disc release by unknown vocalist, Judie Lund, features the same basic backing track and background vocals that were included in two previous recordings by Wally Fayne in 1959 and Art August who had his version pressed on three different labels in a span from 1960 to 1962. Ironically, with all of the push and energy given, and the fact that all three versions were quality Los Angeles pop recordings of the time, none of the five different pressings managed to make the’Hot 100′ Billboard chart. ‘Hold Out Your Hand’ was composed by Wallace Friedman who was the lead vocalist on the first outing credited as Wally Fayne. That disc gave credit to Jesse Hodges as arranger and conductor. The following year, the backing track with the background vocals were beefed up nicely with the inclusion of a dramatic string arrangement added to the mix. A young and handsome fellow by the name of Art August took over lead vocal. The first issued disc from 1960 was on the Transcontinental label and came with a picture sleeve. Production credit was given to O.H. Forsyth and’McCoy’ was inserted into the composer credits. In 1961, the Interlude label released the song hoping for a hit. Eddie Beali was given label credit as producer and arranger. The third Art August version of’Hold Out Your Hand’ was released on Sound-O-Rama Records with Eddie Beali once again on the label and the disc came with a picture sleeve. The last disc of’Hold Out Your Hand’ is what is presented here with no label credit given to arranger or producer. Judie Lund was certainly channeling her inner Brenda Lee to great effect and sadly, sixty years after the fact, the who and whereabouts of Miss Lund and the details of her brief musical history will probably never be revealed.

Born in Buffalo, New York in 1941 as Joan Drost, her family moved to southern California in 1955 where she attended Venice High School and the Santa Monica City College. Along with her studies, Joan excelled in voice and music which eventually led her to Tommy Oliver and his band. Impressed with her vocal ability, he had her in the studio to make a demo record which he presented to the executives at Warner Bros. Records. The label signed Joan post haste in late 1959 and assembled some marvelous jazzy tracks which would be her debut LP with the company Entitled’Positively The Most’, it was initially meant to coincide with her name, Joanie Drost but a name change was implemented and among a list of stage names given to her, Joanie chose’Sommers’ as her performing surname. The LP title still remained the same. over the next two and a half years, six singles and two more albums followed along with television and stage performances galore. Joanie was at her best with standards, big band and torch songs but the powers that were at Warner Bros. sprinkled in some teen/pop material here and there. Other than her debut single,’One Boy’, which peaked at #54 on the Billboard chart, her other singles didn’t do much of anything. Then the planets aligned, and Joanie recorded a song that would change her fortunes dramatically. While in New York in the spring of 1962, she and producer/arranger, Stan Applebaum recorded the Sherman Edwards and Hal David tune,’Johnny Get Angry’. Eventually issued as Warner Bros. 5275 in May 1962, it would climb the charts peaking at #7 with Billboard. An LP was assembled that include a mix of teen material and classy showroom things aimed at adult record buyers. One of the stand-out tracks is what is heard here and was first recorded by Barbara Russell for United Artists in August 1961. Entitle,’Shake Hands With A Fool’ it is an emotive tear-jerker that then twenty-one-year-old Joanie delivers the vocal goods with. Her ability to control her breath and give small gasps of air that emphasized the lyrics of pain by love lost, is beyond impressive to say the least.
Although Joanie didn’t achieve another hit with the status as’Johnny Get Angry’, more singles and albums were to follow. A 1963’bossa-nova’ LP is priceless, and she would record what would become an extremely collectable and very costly single for collectors of soul music,’Dont’ Pity Me’ b/w’My Block’ in 1965.
