And then the sound of an ancient classic: Linda Ronstadt’s “You’re No Good.” Over and over again Ronstadt repeated the words; they seemed to go on forever. Monotonous, hypnotic; fascinated, he stood listening.

http://japan.internet.com/allnet/20120725/3.html

from the album “Enigma”(1967)

One of three known recordings that legendary’Wall of Sound’ arranger, Jack Nitzsche produced and arranged for vocalist, P.J. Proby. ‘You Make Me Feel Like Someone’ was composed by Irwin Levine and Philip Springer (alias – Judy Tree) in 1966. It was first issued on record by Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas in the UK in July 1966 and a mighty fine effort it was The disc was released on Imperial in September 1966. P.J. Proby and Jerry Butler recorded their versions in September 1966 with Jerry’s issued as the B-side of a Mercury single promptly that month. Proby’s version may have been planned as a single release due to the fact that a 45 rpm Sunset Sound acetate disc survives with’You Make Me Feel Like Someone’ cut onto it but The Kramer and Butler versions may have put the kibosh on that since it was ultimately and shamefully relegated to a March 1967 Liberty LP track. In May 1967, a female trio called the Babies released a fine version for Dunhill then in 1968 a single version by Johnny Gilliam came and went on the Modern label. Eloise Laws threw her hat into the ring in 1970 with a Columbia disc and finally a slick version on White Whale by Liz Damon’s Orient Express was issued in Japan in July 1971. There are no doubt other versions of’You Make Me Feel Like Someone’ but this lavishly orchestrated Spectorian musical jewel by P.J. Proby really stands tall above the rest. No expense was wasted for the Jack Nitzsche production, where studio 1 at Sunset Sound Recorders, was jammed to the rafters with musicians and background singers. In this case, at least the recording was officially issued along with two other Nitzsche production for Proby, the majestic,’I Can’t Make It Alone’ and’Sweet Summer Wine’, which was the flip side for the UK issued single.

Jaye Kennedy – i’m Feeling It Too(1966/01)

Surprisingly, along with one 1966 United Artists LP of lushly arranged American standards and a two track inclusion on a 1971 various artists LP entitled,’The Soul Of Jesus Christ Superstar’, this marvelously soulful recording is on the only known single release by powerhouse vocalist, Jaye Kennedy. Recorded in November 1965 at Mirasound Studios in New York City,’I’m Feeling It Too’ b/w/’If This Is Goodbye’ was issued in January 1966. The B-side is from the Broadway show,’ANYA’ and is an impressive adaptation of classical themes by Sergei Rachmaninoff with lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest in which Jaye delivers a powerful vocal performance. The A-side appears to be the only known version of an original soul anthem composed by Joshie Armstead, Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. It truly is a head shaker trying to comprehend how a top notch quality production such as this was left to languish in obscurity along the wayside of recorded music. The disc is one that is desired among collectors of American female soul music and rightly so. Original DJ copies of the single are hard to come by and black stock copies are nearly non existent.
Not much of any information available as to the beginnings of Miss Kennedy’s career nor of her doings after the 1971 LP other than she does have at least one son. It has been noted that Jaye Kennedy has since passed away but no available details regarding her family or of her passing. What a talent…….

Bobby Andriani – Hidin’ My Feelings(1964, Unreleased demo)

(Unreleased songwriters demo acetate disc) The story of the musically gifted vocalist/composer/musician, Bobby’Ziggy’ Adriani is one that include missing pieces to the puzzle. Born July 27, 1943 he grew up on Thompson Avenue in lower Manhattan in New York City. Bobby was the son of Dominick and Mildred Andriani and the brother to Conrad’Conny’, Thomas’Tommy’, Frances, and Mary Ann. Musically inclined at an early age by his late teens, he would join the group the Youngtones sometime around 1960-1961, recording several songs. He and two other members of that group, Johnny’Marsi’ Marsicovetere and Gilbert’Gil’ Rivera would become Marci and the Mates and record two wonderful singles for Big Top Records in 1962-1963. Arranged with strings and kettle drums, the recordings were very much in the style of the Drifters and Ben E. King. The trio then became a folk styled ensemble recording and performing as Johnny, Gil and Bobby for two singles in 1963 with FM Records. By this time, Bobby Andriani and his exceptional voice had gotten himself noticed around the recording studios and the club scene in New York City. He was hired and utilized for background vocal on early Phil Spector projects and at times alongside the likes of Dionne Warwick who after working as a background vocalist, she was embarking on a solo career. Ms. Warwick later acknowledged that Bobby had a sweet voice the likes of an angel. The groups manager, Roy Silver, arranged for the boys to record for Atlantic/Atco Records with one Atco single eventually issued in 1964 credited to Hans, Chris and Anderson. Bobby’s songwriting and vocal ability would propel him to be signed to the label as a solo artist and at the same time, Johnny Beinstock bringing Bobby to the attention of composer Doc Pomus who hired him and gave him his own office as an in-house songwriter for Hill & Range Music within the Brill Building. In 1965, Bobby issued a solo single for Atco coupling two excellent Pomus-Andriani tunes. Between 1964 and 1969, Bobby would compose over 30 songs for the publishing company but sadly, while in his late twenties, it was discovered that he was suffering from schizophrenia. He received royalties from Hill & Range with enough money to share an apartment with his brothers but within a year he lost the apartment and by 1970 became homeless. He would spend the next 34 years living on the streets of Greenwich Village until his death around Christmas of 2004.
During his songwriting days at the Briill Building, not all of Bobby Andriani’s compositions and demo recordings were picked up by other artists and recorded. The recordings of those songs are long gone and all that remain are whatever acetate discs which have managed to survive over the passing of six decades. The 1964 recording presented here is one of those songs that never saw release or publication. Handwritten over the typewritten label on the 10 inch 45 r.p.m. acetate recorded at Associated Recording Studios, is the song title,’Hidin’ My Feelings’ with’His’ being a handwritten change on the label from’My’. Very much in the style of some early Bobby Vee material, it is simple teen/pop fluff. Bobby actually thought the songs that he composed during his brill building days were not that special and somewhat trite. It is true that not all composed songs are hit worthy but among the acetates that were saved, three of his songs are standout numbers. ‘Little Brother’ which was actually entered into the 1964 Catalog of Copyright Entries but never recorded commercially. Bobby’s voice and self-accompaniment on guitar is absolute tear inducing perfection. ‘Don’t Tell Gabrielle’ is another marvelous song that never saw release and lastly,’Till Your Tears Run Dry’. Bobby certainly could construct a heartfelt lyric and soul stirring melody telling the painful story of lost love and thankfully, his demo recordings have been preserved for others to hear at the website, ReverbNation. In 2008, Bobby’s long-time friend, Dennis Genovese made a Documentary on the life of Bobby Andriani entitled,’Ziggy On The Run’ and is an interesting film that runs under one hour.
